Job summary

Beacon Veterinary Specialists seeks a Surgery Recovery Veterinary Assistant to ensure safe, smooth post-anesthesia recovery with continuous monitoring and support. You will monitor vital signs, manage analgesia, and assist with intra- and interdepartmental coordination to optimize patient outcomes.

The role requires knowledge of perioperative medications, ability to respond to complications, and proficiency with monitoring equipment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2–3 years as veterinary assistant; 1–2 years in surgical/anesthesia recovery preferred.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
• Sharp attention to detail and ability to follow protocols.

Responsibilities

• Monitor post-operative patients during anesthetic recovery, including vital signs and pain assessment.
• Recognize abnormal recovery patterns and respond to complications promptly.
• Operate and troubleshoot monitoring equipment (ECG, pulse oximetry, BP, capnography).
• Administer post-operative medications as directed (analgesics, anti-emetics, sedatives).
• Prepare and administer blood products and associated testing.
• Interpret basic lab results to support safe recovery management.
• Place and maintain urinary and IV catheters, and nasogastric tubes as needed.
• Perform pre and post-operative radiographs with proper positioning and safety.
• Understand loco-regional anesthesia effects on ambulation and urination.
• Implement postoperative care protocols tailored to species and procedure.
