Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Joshua Lothringer and collaborators on observational studies of exoplanet atmospheres. The research will include the analysis and interpretation of JWST observations of sub-Neptune and gas giant exoplanets. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be Summer/Fall 2027, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with renewal for a third year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, provides a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI (HST, JWST, Roman). The successful applicant will benefit from the large exoplant collaborations at STScI, JHU, and other nearby institutions.

STScI offers an excellent benefits package and competitive salaries, with pay commensurate with the year of Ph.D. The position includes funding for relocation, and for the computing and conference travel in support of these JWST Projects. STScI also offers a postdoc mentoring program to help develop academic and professional skills to prepare the applicant for future job opportunities.

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Planetary Science, Astronomy, Physics, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in transiting exoplanet time series data analysis and/or atmospheric modeling and retrieval is desirable. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications), and a concise (2-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience. Complete applications received by December 15, 2026, will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters must be submitted by the same date via the on-line application system. Reference #: HRC0016525
