Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position to work with Dr. Massimo Stiavelli and collaborators on observational studies of very low-mass, low metallicity lensed galaxies observed with the James Webb Space Telescope. The research will include data analysis, interpretation and modelling of the data. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2027, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal to a 3 rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. The successful applicant will benefit from a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions supported by STScI (HST, JWST, Roman). STScI also offers a postdoc mentoring program to help develop academic and professional skills to prepare the applicant for future job opportunities.

Any questions about the position should be directed to mstiavel@stsci.edu.

Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or related fields at the start of the position. Expertise in one or more of the following areas in desirable: (a) JWST NIRspec spectroscopy; (b) data reduction of imaging data from space-based observatories; (c) modelling of HII regions using Cloudy. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

The following materials will be requested in PDF format: a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and a concise (1-3 page) statement of research interests, accomplishments, and relevant technical experience. Complete applications received by December 15, 2026 will receive full consideration. Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference. Reference letters must be submitted by the same date via the on-line application system. - Reference #: HRC0017347
