Post-Doc Research Associate - Wolberg Lab

Position Summary

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the Western world, and blood coagulation abnormalities contribute to the pathophysiology of nearly every disease, including cancer, infection, and autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. An NIH‑funded postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the laboratory of Dr. Alisa Wolberg at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Wolberg Lab is part of UNC’s internationally recognized Blood Research Center. Research in the lab focuses on cellular, biochemical, and biophysical mechanisms that regulate blood function and contribute to health and disease.

Projects will be tailored to the fellow’s expertise, with the expectation that the postdoc will initially contribute to established research efforts and, over time, develop an independent line of investigation leading to future fellowship or career development funding. Current projects are funded through an R01 award and focus on mechanisms of hemostasis and thrombosis. Potential areas of emphasis include:

• Factor XIII biology, including regulation of FXIII‑A and FXIII‑B subunits, roles in venous thrombosis and thrombus resolution, and therapeutic targeting strategies
• Fibrin(ogen) degradation and the cellular and enzymatic drivers of thrombus resolution beyond plasminogen
• Cellular and plasma mediators of FXI biology that influence bleeding risk
• Women's health and blood disorders
• Mechanisms contributing to pulmonary embolism

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

PhD or MD in a biological science or a related field. Candidate must have previous research experience in a scientific laboratory setting.

Candidate must have a strong background in biological science and prior peer‑reviewed publications documenting scientific project leadership with skills in experimental design, data analysis, data presentation, contextualization, and scientific writing.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience in blood coagulation research is strongly preferred but not required. Candidates with experience in biochemistry or enzymology, cell biology including tissue culture, histology, mouse models of thrombosis and hemostasis, and/or bioinformatics are encouraged to apply.
