Job summary

Cullman City Schools is seeking an Itinerant Instructional Assistant/Paraprofessional or Itinerant SPED Instructional Assistant to support students with disabilities across multiple sites.

Under the supervision of certified staff, you will assist with instructional activities, implement IEPs/BIPs, and help manage student transitions and daily care needs while maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and meet state/federal requirements.
  • Possess an Alabama Substitute License or able to obtain one.
  • Valid driver's license and access to transportation for travel between schools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist resource and SPED teachers with instructional materials and activities.
  • Provide individual or small-group support to students with disabilities under supervision.
  • Help implement IEPs and BIPs and provide classroom accommodations.
  • Assist with student transitions, mobility, and supervision during non-instructional times.
  • Support daily self-help and personal care tasks as needed.
  • Collect data and maintain logs on student progress and behavior.
  • Operate instructional equipment and maintain confidentiality of student records.

POSITION TITLE: "Possible" Itinerant Instructional Assistant/Paraprofessional or Itinerant Special Education (SPED) Instructional Assistant
REPORTS TO: Principal and Student Services Coordinator
EVALUATION: Cullman City Schools' Support Personnel Evaluation Plan
DAYS/HOURS: 185/7.5 Hours

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Minimum requirement of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Must meet state and federal compliance requirements by possessing one of the following:
    • Associate Degree or higher from an accredited institution; OR
    • Minimum of 48 semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; OR
    • Successful completion of the Alabama State Board of Education-approved WorkKeys assessment.
  3. Must hold a valid Alabama Substitute License; may be obtained prior to board approval.
  4. Valid driver's license and personal transportation for school-to-school travel; occasionally.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Ability to work cooperatively and build positive working relationships with students (including those with special needs), teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Strong verbal and written skills with basic proficiency in educational technology, digital learning tools, and office equipment.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and implement individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) and de-escalation techniques under the direction of a certified teacher.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist resource and special education classroom teachers in preparing instructional materials and implementing individual student activities aligned with state courses of study.
  • Provide individual or small-group instructional support to students with disabilities under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and/or other related services personnel.
  • Assist in implementing student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Behavior Improvement Plans (BIPs), and specific classroom accommodations/modifications.
  • Help students with special needs transition safely through the school environment, including physical transfers, maneuvering adaptive equipment, and supervising during non-instructional times (e.g., cafeteria, playground, arrival/dismissal).
  • Assist students with daily self-help and personal care needs (e.g., toileting, hygiene, mobility, and feeding) as needed.
  • Collect data and maintain accurate logs on student progress, behavior, or intervention tracking as directed by the special education teacher and/or other related services personnel.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment and standard instructional technology (e.g., copiers, laminators, assistive devices) necessary for preparing classroom materials.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student records and personal information in compliance with IDEA and FERPA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, positive human relations skills, and attend required professional development or supervisory meetings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Movement & Agility: Regularly sits, stands, walks, runs, bends, stoops, squats, crouches, and kneels to actively support students
  • Lifting & Positioning: Frequently reaches and regularly lifts, pushes, pulls, carries, or moves up to 50 pounds (including positioning students and managing adaptive equipment)
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Behavioral Support: Interaction with students who exhibit behavioral challenges managed under a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP); based on job placement.
  • Travel: Occasional travel between schools based on student and program needs.
  • Itinerant Placement: May be reassigned to different facilities as required by student and program demands.
  • Collaboration: Regular verbal and functional communication with students, staff, and administration
BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIREMENT:

(Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Cullman City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by internal applicants by means of transfer.

Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial year of employment if hired after September 30.
