Job summary

The Hoover City Board of Education is seeking an Exceptional Education Aide to support instructional staff and students. Under the supervision of a certified teacher, you will assist with classroom activities, reinforce learning, support behavior plans, and help with materials and assistive technology.

This role requires collaborative teamwork, discretion with sensitive information, and a commitment to accommodating students with diverse needs across the day.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level education; Alabama certificate preferred.
  • Experience with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of academic and behavioral strategies.
  • Able to participate in restraint training.
  • Ability to use current technology.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Team player with ability to handle confidential information.
  • Meets suitability criteria under applicable child protection laws.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the school system's goals and priorities under supervision.
  • Performs tasks related to classroom instruction with certified staff.
  • Assists students to maintain behavioral control and follow behavior plans.
  • Works with small groups to reinforce learning.
  • Guides independent study and enrichment as directed.
  • Assists students needing extra attention and/or help.
  • Prepares instructional materials for classroom use.
  • Assists with feeding, positioning, lifting, or moving of students as needed.
  • Assists with toileting, cleaning, and changing as required.
  • Supports routine classroom clerical duties and assistive technology use.
  • Supervises students in special activities and during transitions.
  • Participates in restraint training and may restrain a student if needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Exceptional Education Aide

REPORTS TO: Exceptional Education Support Teacher

JOB GOAL: To assist the teacher in achieving identified instructional/behavioral objectives and to help students take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years of college level education; Valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate preferred
  • Prior experience working with students with disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic and behavioral strategies and techniques to assist students in learning
  • Physically able to participate in restraint training and participate in restraint of a student, if needed
  • Ability to use current technology
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
  2. Under the supervision of a certified teacher, performs tasks related to classroom instruction
  3. Works with identified student(s) to maintain behavioral control and implement behavior plans as needed
  4. Works with small groups of students to reinforce learning initially introduced by the teacher
  5. Guides independent study, enrichment work, and corrective instruction directed by the teacher
  6. Assists individual students who need special attention and/or assistance
  7. Assists the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom use
  8. Assists with the feeding, positioning, lifting, or moving of students as needed
  9. Assists with toileting of students, including cleaning and changing as needed
  10. Assists with routine classroom clerical duties
  11. Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices and with writing as needed
  12. Assists in the supervision of students who participate in special class activities
  13. Participates in restraint training and is able to restrain a student as needed
  14. Supervises students who may need to leave the classroom setting to complete independent work or to navigate around the school
  15. Helps with extra duties related to the supervision of students (lunch periods, bus duties, assemblies, field trips, etc.)
  16. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
  17. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
