Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Medical Interpreter for per diem, in-person work to support clinician-patient encounters and coordinate interpreter services.

You will translate materials, educate staff about cultural considerations for Portuguese-speaking patients, and assist with scheduling freelance interpreters while maintaining high interpretation standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience.
• Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation.
• Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
• Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
• Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese.
• Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment.
• Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Interpret clinically between clinician and patient in face-to-face or telephone encounters.
• Act as a liaison between patients and staff.
• Inform clinicians about cultural considerations for Portuguese-speaking patients.
• Translate Portuguese patient information materials, consent forms, etc.
• Edit translated materials.
• Identify areas where hospital can better meet needs of Portuguese-speaking communities.
• Assist with training staff interpreters.
• Coordinate/schedule freelance interpreters.
• Data entry and data collection.
• Complete interpreter paperwork.
• Assist with scheduling and confirming patient appointments.
• Support patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed.
• Contribute towards developing an environment welcoming to Portuguese-speaking patients.
• Assists in coordination/scheduling of freelance interpreters.

MEDICAL INTERPRETER - PER DIEM

Please note that this is an in-person position.

Job Description:

Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.

Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.

Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treatingPortuguese speaking patients.

Interpreter for ancillary departments.

Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed.

Translates into Portuguese patient information materials, consent forms, etc.

Edits translated materials.

Identifies areas where hospital can better meet needs ofPortuguese speakingcommunities, i.e.., outreach, signage, etc.

Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.

Assists with training staff interpreters.

Orients patients to hospital as needed, i.e., L & D tours, community events, etc.

Other duties as needed.

Assists in the coordination/scheduling of free-lance interpreters.

Assists with data entry/data collection .

Completes interpreter paperwork.

Assists as needed scheduling and confirming patient appointments

Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital.

Contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive toPortuguese speaking patients.

Working Conditions:

Normal office environment

Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions.

Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury.

Normal office environment for administrative duties.

Pay Range:

$25.04 - $37.56

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geographyof work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
