Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking an interpreter to support clinician-patient encounters, liaise with staff, and advise on cultural considerations for Spanish-speaking patients. The role includes coordination, training, and outreach activities within a hospital setting in Massachusetts.

The interpreter will handle on-site duties, contribute to a welcoming environment, and may work evenings or weekends as needed. A certification program and bilingual skills are required.

Qualifications

  • Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
  • Satisfactory fluency in English and target language(s) with medical terminology.
  • One year of experience working as an interpreter in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Certification of completion of an Interpreter Program required.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during encounters.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
  • Informs clinicians about cultural considerations for Spanish-speaking patients.
  • Interpreter for ancillary departments.
  • Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed.
  • Provides support and coverage for the Interpreter Services Coordinator as needed.
  • Edits translated materials.
  • Identifies areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Spanish communities.
  • Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients.
  • Assists with training staff interpreters.
  • Orients patients to hospital as needed (e.g., tours, events).
  • May perform on-call services on evenings and weekends/holidays.
  • May assist with Community Health classes needing a Spanish interpreter.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Assists in coordination/scheduling of interpreters.
  • Assists with data entry/data collection.
  • Completes interpreter paperwork promptly.
  • Assists as needed in scheduling and confirming patient appointments.
  • Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital.
  • Contributes to developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to our patients.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

  • 1. Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face-to-face or telephone encounters.
  • 2. Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.
  • 3. Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Spanish-speaking patients.
  • 4. Interpreter for ancillary departments.
  • 5. Interpreters between non-clinical staff and patients as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • 1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED). BA/BS preferred.
  • 2. Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
  • 3. Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
  • 4. Satisfactory fluency in English and target language(s) at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation. Satisfactory proficiency in medical terminology (i.e., basic anatomy, physiology and diagnostic procedures and treatments) at a level that ensures accurate interpretation.
  • 5. One year of experience working as an interpreter in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • 6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • 7. Certification of completion of an Interpreter Program required. National certification preferred.
Physical Requirements & Environment:
  • 1. Normal office environment.
  • 2. Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions.
  • 3. Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury.
  • 4. Normal office environment for administrative duties.

Pay Range: $25.75 - $38.26

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
