Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Medical Interpreter for an in-person per diem role in Cambridge, MA. The interpreter will facilitate communication between clinicians and Portuguese-speaking patients and assist staff with cultural needs.

The position involves translating materials, coordinating freelance interpreters, and supporting patient orientation and hospital outreach. Strong bilingual skills and clinical interpreting experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience.
• Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation.
• Bi-lingual (oral and written) bi-cultural skills.
• Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory.
• Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese.
• Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment.
• Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during in-person or telephone encounters.
• Acts as a liaison between patients and staff.

• Assists with training staff interpreters.
• Orients patients to hospital as needed.
• Other duties as needed.
• Assists in the coordination/scheduling of free-lance interpreters.
• Assists with data entry/data collection.
• Completes interpreter paperwork.
• Assists as needed scheduling and confirming patient appointments.
• Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital.
• Contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to Portuguese speaking patients.

Working Conditions:

• Normal office environment
• Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions.
• Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury.
• Normal office environment for administrative duties.

Pay Range:

$25.04 - $37.56

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
