Job summary

Capital Regional District’s transfer depot is seeking an Auxiliary attendant to open/close the facility, manage traffic, and assist customers with recycling guidance. You will sort, store, and record materials, and ensure proper handling of household hazardous waste under safety policies.

This role requires flexibility to work variable hours including days, evenings, and weekends, along with maintaining accurate manifests and customer service excellence. Training provided for depot procedures.

Qualifications

  • Requires High School Graduation and at least 1 year of related experience.
  • Familiarity with WHMIS, TDG, and First Aid (OFA 1) preferred.
  • Ability to operate basic tools and maintain records accurately.

Summary

This position will operate the transfer station. This includes opening and closing the facility, traffic control and maintenance of the depot. This position also liaises with customers in a friendly and helpful manner, providing information on how and what can be recycled, as well as regulating the disposal and recycling of materials being received. The attendant is responsible for receiving, sorting, segregating, packing and recording as well as storing and shipping of garbage and recyclable materials being received at the depot.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of the transfer depot including daily clean-up and maintenance.
  • Directs traffic in a safe and orderly manner, maintains roadways free of debris and keeping the depot safely accessible.
  • Controls access to the facility and secures it when it is not open for business.
  • Greets and provides instruction and assistance to customers regarding the use of the depot and recycling stewardship programs including advising customers of options for materials not accepted at the depot.
  • Identifies, classifies, sorts, segregates, and stores various materials as per stewardship program requirements.
  • Ensures that all household hazardous waste (HHW) handling adheres to all applicable federal, provincial, CRD and local regulations and statutes in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Bags any containers that are damaged, leaking or of suspect integrity.
  • Cleans up spills at the depot within the scope of the provided training and available equipment and reports spills as per the CRD's Spill Reporting Procedures and Guidelines.
  • Operates the compactor bins.
  • Communicates with stewardship partners, processors, haulers and other contractors as needed to schedule hauling of garbage and recyclables offsite and ensuring accurate records are maintained.
  • Reviews and signs waste manifests and bills of lading.
  • Collects debit/credit payment for garbage and recycling transactions and balances associated paperwork.
  • Collects data occasionally as part of customer surveys.
  • Maintains good relations with all customers of the depot and any contractors doing work for the depot.
  • Follows all policies, procedures, and standards of the CRD.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Key Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with customers in a professional and tactful manner while demonstrating good judgement.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use various computer word processing, spreadsheet and project scheduling programs and databases.
  • Knowledge and understanding of WorkSafeBC practices/protocols, Workers' Compensation Act and OHandS Regulations and other relevant safety statutes.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the Environmental Management Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations.
  • Knowledge of CRD Bylaws governing the disposal of solid waste, controlled and permitted wastes.
  • Able to perform routine arithmetical computations and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to read, follow and apply operating procedures and policies related to solid waste and product stewardship programs.
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to perform the required duties.
  • Ability and flexibility to work variable hours.
  • Skilled in the use and operation of a variety of hand tools and equipment.
