(Pool) Temporary Assistant Athletic Instructor (All Sports)

Southern Oregon University

Position Summary

Temporary Assistant Athletic Instructor (AAI) – All Sports appointments may become available on an as‑needed, part‑time, limited‑duration basis. Assignments vary in classification, salary, and length, and provide varying levels of coaching and instructional support.

Applicants will be kept on file for future positions. Qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews by the hiring department. Applicants may withdraw at any time. The pool may be refreshed annually.

Minimum Requirements

Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
Essential Functions

(40%) Coach‑specific team positions under the direction of the head coach. Instruct individual athletes on fundamentals, strategy, and techniques. Assist with strength and conditioning, opponent scouting, and team travel logistics.

(40%) Instruct classes in the Athletic Department, specifically PE 196 Varsity Athletics and/or PE 180 Varsity Conditioning. Prep work may include film evaluation, practice planning, conditioning/workout planning, game‑day coaching, and travel with the team to away games. AAI’s are responsible for assigning grades at the end of the term based on the established syllabus.

(20%) Assist in developing recruitment strategies, managing an assigned recruiting territory, following up on prospective student‑athletes, and researching high schools to visit. Other duties may include administrative work such as game management, facility management, fundraising, resident hall supervision, and coordination with resident halls.

  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to interpret and consistently apply complex policies and procedures.
  • Proactive assessment of work operations and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work confidentially, exercising judgment and discretion.
  • Initiative and independent planning within broad parameters.
  • High level of productivity and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, setting priorities for multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and maintain positive relationships in a diverse environment.
  • Basic knowledge of university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience providing training and direction to student assistants.
  • Knowledge of NAIA, Cascade Conference, and SOU rules on recruiting and eligibility.
Physical Demand
  • Must be physically capable of demonstrating movements required of the sport.
Special Conditions
  • Willingness to travel and attend off‑site training programs.
  • Ability to work additional hours and adjust working hours for special jobs, including emergency calls.
  • Successful completion of pre‑employment background check.
  • Position is non‑exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and subject to overtime regulations.
  • Mandatory reporter under Oregon Revised Statutes and the Oregon Department of Human Services.
  • Compliance with SOU's Intercollegiate Athletics Code of Ethics Policy (IMP 8.000).
