Job Summary

Under the direction of management, employee performs duties relating to overseeing the City owned aquatic centers and seasonal pool staff, ensuring a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all patrons. This is a part-time/seasonal position working approximately 30 - 40 hours per week. Evenings, weekends, and some holidays are required.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Staff Management and Development:
  2. Supervises and manages pool staff, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
  3. Provides guidance, support, and leadership to the pool staff, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, rule enforcement, customer service standards, and facility policies.
  4. Fosters a positive work culture by encouraging teamwork, respect, and open communication among staff members.
  5. Conducts regular staff meetings, training sessions, and drills to maintain readiness, improve team performance, promote professional development, and reinforce a positive work environment.
  6. Implements staff incentive and recognition programs to motivate and reward outstanding performance.
  7. Approves timesheets in online software in an accurate and timely manner.
  8. Collects, deposits, and accounts for monies received on a daily basis with cashiers; completes paperwork associated with collection of fees in an accurate and timely manner.
  9. Facility Operations:
  10. Oversees daily operations of the pool facilities, including opening and closing procedures, maintenance, and cleanliness.
  11. Ensures compliance with safety regulations, emergency procedures, and health codes.
  12. Manages inventory and supplies, coordinating orders and restocking with staff as necessary.
  13. Collaborates with maintenance teams and completes necessary work order forms to repair, upgrade, and maintain pool equipment and facilities in a timely manner.
  14. Checks and monitors chemicals in the pool water to ensure proper chemistry and clarity are maintained; reports issues immediately to management.
  15. Customer Service and Engagement:
  16. Fosters a positive and welcoming atmosphere for patrons by providing exceptional customer service.
  17. Addresses patron inquiries, concerns, and complaints promptly and professionally, explaining and defending policies and procedures relating to the operation of the aquatic centers.
  18. Plans and organizes poolside events, programs, and activities to enhance the overall guest experience.
  19. Administration:
  20. Maintains accurate records of attendance, incidents, and financial transactions.
  21. Prepares reports, analyzes data, and makes recommendations for improvements in operations and services.
  22. Works cohesively with management to devise the strategies that will lead them to achieve the Official Goals established by the City of Hurst for the Aquatic Division.
  23. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  24. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
  25. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  26. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong leadership and managerial skills to effectively oversee a diverse team and facility operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of pool safety, lifeguarding, and emergency procedures.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Proficient swimming skills and capability to perform rescues confidently and effectively.
  • Organizational skills to manage/create schedules, conduct training sessions, and maintain records.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at applying the City of Hurst’s Code of Ideals in all interpersonal relations with city staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including computer keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and printer.

Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age 17 years.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of lifeguarding experience required, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Proven experience in pool management or a related supervisory role is preferred.
  • Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Instructor certification required or ability to obtain before June. Certification and training will be provided upon employment.
  • Experience in staff development, training, and implementing incentive/recognition programs is preferred.
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, flexibility to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and some holidays, and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

This job entails moderate physical labor, which requires strength and agility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to hear guests and staff in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Advanced ability to swim and perform rescue operations.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time when performing administrative duties and observing staff or pool guests.
  • Ability to lift and carry persons while performing rescue operations.
  • Ability to orally direct guests and staff in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Ability to distinguish colors when working with chemicals.

Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun. Work performed is subject to chemical hazards.

Work may be subject to time pressures, emergency situations, frequent changes to tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and dealing with difficult persons.
