Job summary

City of Compton seeks a Pool Manager to supervise staff and manage the pool facility, ensuring a safe environment and compliance with health regulations. Responsibilities include staffing, budgeting, water quality tests, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor.

The role requires Water Safety Instructor certification (or ability to obtain), CPR and First Aid by hire, and a willingness to pass a required agility swim test. Orientation is mandatory before employment.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a community college with about three seasons of paid aquatics experience.
  • Ability to perform lifesaving techniques and instruct swimming strokes.
  • Must have or obtain Water Safety Instructor; CPR and First Aid by time of hire.
  • Pass a physical agility swim test as part of selection.
  • Must complete mandatory orientation before employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff and operate the pool facility.
  • Maintain water quality and equipment, test chemical balance.
  • Prepare reports and records on attendance, staff performance, and facility status.
  • Secure cash, tickets, and handle revenues.
  • Coordinate with Recreation Supervisor and other staff.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local health department requirements.

Job description

The Pool Manager is responsible for staff supervision and facility operation; communicates closely with staff in the coordination of programs and operations; maintain a safe environment for pool patrons and ensures that departmental polices are followed.

The Pool Manager reports to the Recreation Supervisor.

Prepares daily lesson plans, materials, equipment and supplies; maintain records on attendance and participants; prepares written reports and evaluates staff performance; supervises inventories and clean up of aquatic equipment; supervises daily maintenance schedule throughout facility; attends in-service training and performs related duties as required; tests pool water for correct chemical balance and treats with chemicals as required by the state and local health departments; maintains filtration and chlorination plant; supervises collections and disbursement of cash, and secures cash, pool receipts and tickets;prepares reports on the status of the pool water, facility and pool activities.

Possession of or the ability to obtain Water Safety Instructor, must have a valid CPR and First Aid certificates by the time of hire.

Candidates may be required to pass a physical agility swim test as part of the selection process. The test may include the following components:

All candidates must pass the physical agility swim test (Swim 300 yards continuously, using freestyle and the breaststroke; Surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object. Tread water for 2 minutes; Exit pool without using a ladder).

ALL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A MANDATORY ORIENTATION BEFORE BEING CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to graduation from a community college and approximately three (3) seasons of paid experience in aquatics. Paid experience in recreation or aquatics may be substituted for the required education on a pro-rata basis up to two (2) years.

Ability to:

Perform lifesaving techniques; effectively perform and instruct participants in advance level swimming strokes; diving techniques, work with and evaluate individuals of various ages and skill levels; maintain and prepare class materials and equipment; establish and maintain cooperative working relations with other staff and the public.The ability to speak Spanish is desirable, but not required.

Age:

21 years of age and older

License:

Possession of a valid Class “C” driver’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:

All Completed applications will be reviewed and those considered most qualified will be invited to participate in an appraisal interview. Prior to employment, all candidates must provide proof of both valid and current Water Safety Instructor, CPR and First Aid certificates. Official sealed documentation required upon successful completion of aforementioned training courses. All candidates who do not possess a valid and current re-certification must pass the physical agility swim test (Swim 300 yards continuously, using freestyle and the breaststroke; Surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object; Tread water for 2 minutes; Exit pool without using a ladder).

All employment offers are conditional based upon the successful completion of a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, reference and background check. All new employees are required to take a loyalty oath.
