Job summary

The City of Compton is seeking an Aquatics Instructor to lead a variety of swimming and lifesaving classes under supervision. You will prepare lesson plans, manage materials and equipment, test participant skill levels, and maintain attendance records.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed advanced lifesaving courses.

  • Spanish language ability is desirable but not required.

Job description

Instructs a variety of swimming classes; and performs related duties as required. Incumbent will work under close supervision of Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager. Conducts beginning through advance swimming classes; lifesaving classes. Explains and demonstrates safe and proper techniques. Prepares daily lesson plans, materials, equipment and supplies. Tests and evaluates skill level of participants. Maintains records on attendance and participants. Prepares written reports, evaluating the instruction programs and recommending improvements. Inventories and cleans aquatic equipment. Attends in-service training and performs related duties as required.

Experience

Must have completed advanced lifesaving courses stated in minimum qualifications.

Certifications

Possession of or the ability to obtain valid and current Lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications no later than the time of hire.

Physical Agility Swim Test

Candidates may be required to pass a physical agility swim test as part of the selection process. The test may include the following components:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously, using freestyle and the breaststroke;
  • Surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object;
  • Tread water for 2 minutes;
  • Exit pool without using a ladder.
Mandatory Orientation

Knowledge of
  • Lifesaving techniques;
  • Advance swimming strokes and techniques;
  • Methods of aquatics and safety instruction.
Ability to
  • Perform lifesaving techniques;
  • Effectively perform and instruct participants in advance level swimming strokes;
  • Diving techniques, work with and evaluate individuals of various ages and skill levels;
  • Maintain and prepare class materials and equipment;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with other staff and the public.

The ability to speak Spanish is desirable, but not required.

Age

15 years of age and older.

Application and Selection Procedure

All completed applications will be reviewed and those considered most qualified will be invited to participate in an appraisal interview. Prior to employment, all candidates must provide proof of both valid and current Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid certificates. Official sealed documentation required upon successful completion of aforementioned training courses.

Appointment

All employment offers are conditional based upon the successful completion of a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, reference and background check. All new employees are required to take a loyalty oath.

Veterans Preference

In all entrance examinations (open-competitive only) for positions in the Classified Service, veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States during time(s) of war, and who attain an overall passing score in the examination, are allowed additional preferential credit in accordance with the Personnel Rules and Regulations. In order to claim veterans' credit, the applicant must submit proof of service and honorable discharge (showing specific dates of service) on a U.S. Military form (DD-214) at the time of application or not later than the final filing date for the examination.
