Job summary

University of Kansas invites experienced scholars to apply for part-time, temporary instructional positions. Courses are taught at the Lawrence or Edwards campus with a pro-rated workload for Fall 2026. Instructors develop syllabi, lectures, and assessments while advising students and collaborating with colleagues.

Job description

Position Overview

The University of Kansas Department of Special Education invites experienced scholars (e.g., retired university faculty, field researchers, program administrators, building principals, professional developers, teacher mentors, and academic coaches) to submit applications for part-time, temporary positions as course instructors. Amount of work required can vary by position and will range in FTE.

The Instructor is an instructional, adjunct faculty position that is not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. This is a term appointment for the Fall 2026 semester. Renewal will be based upon unit needs and funding as well as performance that meets expectations, not to exceed two continuous semesters.

This position is subject to acollective bargaining agreementbetween The University of Kansas and United Academics, United Academics of KU, AAUP, or AFT. UAKU is the exclusive representative. As the State of Kansas is a right to work state, you have the right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.

Job Description
100% Instructional Duties:

Part-time instructors teach graduate-level and undergraduate courses. All classes are held at either the Lawrence or Edwards campus.

  • As an instructor for the university, primary duties and responsibilities include: teaching in a specific field, developing course materials, developing and managing syllabi, creating lectures and assignments, grading student work, advising students and holding office hours.
  • All instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, be current in the field, and are required to adhere to departmental, school/college and university polices and procedures.
Required Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in special education, educational leadership, educational psychology or related human services field for graduate teaching assignments. Masters degree in special education, educational leadership, educational psychology or related human services field for undergraduate teaching assignments
  2. Experience teaching, supervising, or coaching adult learners.
  3. Experience teaching courses related to special education.
  4. Experience working in public schools providing integrated special education services for students with disabilities within general education classrooms.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise related to teaching students with disabilities in general education settings, community program development, classroom supervision, online teaching, and school leadership experience.
