Job summary

Disability Rights California (DRC) seeks a Public Policy Advocate I or II to lead legislative and budget advocacy and community education. You will monitor policy proposals, draft materials, testify, and empower Californians with disabilities.

Ideal candidates have demonstrated legislative experience, ability to analyze complex policy, and collaborate with diverse partners and communities. Sacramento-based role with occasional travel and a focus on equity in public services.

Qualifications

• Experience working with diverse organizations, the public, officials and disability communities.
• Knowledge of public policy issues and legislative processes at multiple levels.
• Ability to analyze legislation and draft statements for the organization.
• Familiarity with laws impacting people with disabilities locally, state-wide, and federally.
• Ability to collaborate with staff, community groups, agencies and the Legislature.
• Ability to explain complex policy in clear terms for varied audiences.

Responsibilities

• Lead policy work in subject areas such as education, labor and ADA accessibility.
• Engage with the Capitol and disability communities on key issues.
• Represent DRC in legislative processes and with other stakeholders.
• Analyze and develop recommendations on proposals and budgets.
• Draft position letters and amendments for bills and budget items.
• Testify at legislative hearings and build relationships with agencies.
