Job Summary
The Strategy, Performance and Change Directorate incorporates core functions that are critical to achievement of the outcomes in the DBS Strategy 2025-28. These are: Strategy and Business Development; Change Management and Business Improvement and Organisational Performance and Intelligence.
The Policy Adviser will work as part of a small knowledgeable team to provide accurate and timely advice and guidance to ensure operational policy is applied correctly and consistently. The role involves developing and maintaining detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and an understanding of how this legislation impacts processes within DBS.
The role is varied and challenging. It offers excellent development and progression opportunities and the platform to learn new skills and engage with other areas of the business.
We are going through a period of change and your ability to understand the needs of DBS, our customers and the safeguarding impact will enable you to influence policy discussions. You will be able to distil complex legislative concepts into easily understandable operational policy and effectively communicate this to internal stakeholders.
The work you complete will require excellent attention to detail, the ability to explain complex legislation to operational colleagues, and knowledge to discuss legislative concepts and specific points with other government departments and legal colleagues.
As a Policy Adviser, you will provide valuable advice and guidance to inform operational decisions that are crucial in supporting delivery of organisation targets and strategic objectives.
Job Description
The successful candidate will:
- Play an active part as a member of the Policy Team, supporting the SEOs and Head of Service in their functions;
- Contribute to the identification and review of correspondence and operational policy business needs;
- Develop and maintain the skills and knowledge required to deliver effective services to the business; including an in depth understanding of relevant legislation to provide advice and guidance to the business as required
- Effectively managing own capacity and that of any direct reports to ensure that resources are adequate to deliver the services offered by the team, escalating concerns to line manager where appropriate;
- Identify and develop tools to support delivery of key operational policy information to provide a cost effective and supportive approach to delivery of customer services.
- Support the Policy Managers in engagement with key external operational policy stakeholders;
- Establish, develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders with a view to supporting the business with regard to existing and proposed legislative and policy position;
- Oversee the management and development of the internal Enquiry service
- Conduct reviews of relevant project documentation and being responsible for approval where appropriate;
- Provide appropriate and timely advice and support to projects;
- Adopting a flexible approach to suit the requirements of each project taking into account business needs and team capabilities.
