Job summary

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is seeking a Police Trainee to complete the CMPD Academy and earn NC certification as a sworn officer. Trainees participate in structured training and field drills, performing entry-level law enforcement work under close supervision.

CMPD offers three distinct Academy Tracks; ensure you apply for the correct position. Applicants must have NC BLET within 12 months or hold active NC certification and not qualify for Lateral Trainee.

Qualifications

• Must possess High School Diploma/GED.
• Be at least 20 years old.
• Be a U.S. Citizen.
• Have not committed or been convicted of felony or serious misdemeanor.
• Have not committed or been convicted of DWI or DUI in the past five years.
• Pass entry level physical ability test.
• Must be able to wear a gas mask and pass an OSHA fit test.
• Pass extensive background investigation.
• Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable.
• Be approved by Civil Service Board.
• Normal Color Vision and 20/30 visual acuity.
• Pass pre-employment Drug Screening Test.
• Complete NC BLET within past 12 months or hold active NC certification.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a structured law enforcement training academy.
• Participate in field training with a field training officer.
• Meet training requirements set by state and CMPD.
• Perform entry-level law enforcement work under close supervision.
• Prepare and maintain logs, records, reports and files.
• Keep tools and equipment in safe condition and follow policies.
• Work with community on crime reduction projects.
• Assist in developing crime reduction programs when becoming an Officer.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
