Job Description

Job Title: Police Sergeant

Reports to: Chief of Police

Dept./School: Police Department

Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt

Pay Grade: PD4–245 days

Primary Purpose:

Patrols district property to protect all students, personnel and visitors from physical harm and prevent property loss due to theft or vandalism. Enforces all laws including municipal ordinances, county ordinances and state laws. Works independently.

Qualifications
Education/Certification
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Texas Peace Office License issued by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) – Advanced Certification; Masters Certification preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • General knowledge of criminal investigation, police report writing and criminal laws
  • Training and ability to subdue offenders, including use of firearms and handcuffs
  • Advanced knowledge of patrol functions, criminal investigation, police report writing and criminal law
  • Knowledge of Penal Code, Education Code, Family code and Health and Safety Code
  • Bonded as required by Texas Education code 37.081 (h)
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults
  • Ability to furnish own police equipment (except uniforms)
  • Ability to pass alcohol/drug test, psychological and physical examination
  • Have a clear criminal record background as verified by the State of Texas
  • Acceptable driving record as verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety Annually
Experience
  • Tenyears experience as a Peace Officer, School Based Law Enforcement (SBLE) law enforcement experience preferred
  • Advanced Certification Required
Major Responsibilities and Duties
General

Law Enforcement
  • Supervise subordinate personnel, including assignment of duties and scheduled events.
  • Review reports prepared by all police officers.
  • Assure that all police officers are properly trained to fulfill their job responsibility.
  • Assist with patrol of campuses as needed.
  • Use such force as authorized by law.
  • Respond to all calls from campuses concerning crisis situations, accidents and reports of crime.
  • Investigate all criminal offenses that occur within district’s jurisdiction that involves the district’s business or safety.
  • Collect and preserve evidence for criminal investigations including witness statements and physical evidence.
  • Arrest perpetrators, file appropriate charges and ensure placement in jail or juvenile detention centers for law violations as necessary.
  • Write effective legal incident reports.
  • Testify in court as needed.
Consultation
  • Work cooperatively with other police agencies to share information and provide other assistance.
  • Serve as a liaison between administration and law enforcement agencies.
  • Maintain direct contact with campus principals.
Safety
  • Help provide traffic control at athletic events, school closings or openings or at any other time.
  • Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed.
  • Operate all equipment including firearms according to established safety procedures.
Administration
  • Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and documents required, including affidavits for arrest, incident reports and activity reports.
  • Maintain TCOLE training records and ensure compliance with all state mandates.
  • Coordinate crime intervention and prevention programs.
  • Ensure that subordinates operate within established district and departmental guidelines.
  • Evaluate subordinates job performance annually.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

All subordinate personnel.

District vehicle, firearm, handcuffs, alarm system, fire extinguisher, security equipment, personal computer, and copier.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintain emotional control under stress. Strenuous walking, standing and climbing; ability to operate a motor vehicle, specific hearing and visual requirements; ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions including violent and armed confrontations.

Work outdoors in varying climate conditions; drive in all different areas of district at odd hours; on call 24 hours a day.
