Position Summary

Under the direction of a commanding officer, the Sergeant is primarily responsible as a first-line supervisor, in addition to performing general law enforcement and specialized duties. Work assignments require independent judgment and leadership. This is a full-time supervisory role, including making work assignments, monitoring activities, providing on-the-job training, and assisting in administrative duties. The Sergeant will plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise staff on shifts, task forces, or units; develop and enforce policies; provide training and evaluation; and may assume command in the absence of a superior. The role includes acting as team leader on investigation teams or special units, and providing leadership on specialized teams such as sexual assault or emergency medical response.

FLSA:

Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)

Anticipated Hiring Range:

$10,453 - $10,941 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range:

$10,453 - $11,449 per month

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

• Knowledge of law enforcement methods, procedures, criminal codes, and laws.
• Effective communication skills, report writing, independent judgment, leadership, supervision, and policy development abilities.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent, graduation from a P.O.S.T. academy, and three+ years of law enforcement experience.
• Completion of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year.

Required Qualifications

Experience:

• Supervisory or lead work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• Knowledge of local laws, emergency response, current policing trends, report writing, stress management, relationship building, diplomacy, collaboration, multi-tasking, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Work Requirements

• Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
• Law enforcement experience in higher education or college setting.
• Experience in a diverse environment, knowledge of CSU policies, and additional supervisory experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications

• Eligible to be a peace officer in California.
• Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or Basic Certificate.
• Valid California driver’s license.
