Position Summary

Pursuant to the University of California Universitywide Police Policies and Administrative Procedures section 703, if at least ten current and qualified University of California Police Officers apply, no external candidates may be considered.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION

The 2025 Police Sergeant promotional examination will consist of three components, which will be weighted as follows:

  • Written Examination 20%
  • Community Oral Board 30%
  • Police Oral Board 50%

The written exam is created by CPS HR Test# LP101A-CA. The top ten candidates or those candidates who receive a score of 70% or higher on the written examination, whichever group is greater, will be invited to participate in the subsequent promotional process components.

The written exam is scheduled to be held at UCLA on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 8:30am. Location will be provided to applicants.

ORAL BOARD

The Oral Board panels will consist of a structured interview. Community panel members may include key members of both campus and off-campus departments and groups. Police panel members may include internal and/or external police management.

The Oral Board may include the use of the following additional materials:

  • UCLA PD Policy Manual
  • Federated University Police Officers Association Contract
  • UCLA Police Department Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Discussion and review of candidates' previous work record and performance

Date

The oral board interviews are scheduled to be held at UCLA on the week of July 21, 2025. Location and interview times will be provided to eligible applicants.

QUALIFIED CANDIDATES LIST AND SELECTION

Final score will be based on candidate performance. A banded list will be established and used exclusively for UCLA Police Department promotions to the rank of Police Sergeant. The list is intended to remain active for one year from the date of posting and may be extended up to one additional year.

As vacant positions become available, the most qualified candidates and current UCPD Sergeants interested in lateral transfer from other UC campuses may be invited to participate in a final selection interview with the Chief of Police.

NOTE: As of May 16, 2025, Police Sergeants also receive POST Certificate Pay. All Police Sergeants must obtain a POST Supervisory Certificate within two years of appointment to continue receiving POST Certificate Pay.


Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Sworn CA peace officer Minimum three years experience (internal candidates) (Required) Or
  • Sworn CA peace officer Minimum five years experience (external candidates) (Required) Or
  • UCPD Police Sergeant Currently employed as UCPD Police Sergeant (Required) Or
  • Working knowledge of California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, Evidence Code, Government Code, Education Code, Health and Safety Codes, other codes necessary for the enforcement of law and order, and LA County Booking Procedures and requirements. (Required)
  • Skill in management of personnel, equipment and material resources including developing utilization, deployment plans and:-organizing work flow to accomplish established objectives-delegating responsibility-evaluating subordinate effectiveness-administering necessary discipline-maintain and promote morale-identify and recommend training needs for staff as appropriate-train and instruct sworn officers in such topics as arrest and control techniques(Required)
  • Ability to use all law enforcement related equipment, i.e., variety of firearms, batons, mobile and portable radios etc., operation of emergency vehicles (police car, ambulance), and arrest and control techniques. (control holds, take downs, baton). (Required)
  • Ability to perform all of the functions of a Police Officer. (Required)
  • Solid knowledge of law, regulation, and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions. (Required)
  • Solid knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment. (Required)
  • Solid ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. (Required)
  • Solid ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgement. (Required)
  • Solid ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology (Required)
  • Solid knowledge of use and legal application of firearms, and other police weapons, equipment, or tools. (Required)
  • Solid ability to credibly represent the Police Department in an official capacity (Required)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • High School Diploma High school diploma or equivalent. (Required)
  • Possess a valid California driver license Immediate (Required) And
  • Possession of a POST Basic certificate and successful completion of probationary period. Immediate (Required) And
  • Possession of a POST Intermediate certificate Immediate (Required) And
  • Completion of a POST-certified 80-hour Supervisory course within one year of promotion or appointment Within one year (Required) And
  • Ability to successfully complete other training or prerequisites as required by regulation, law, or policy. Successful medical and psychological evaluation required. Immediate (Required) And
  • Is at least 21 years of age and is a UC citizen or has permanent resident alien status and achieves citizenship within three years. Immediate (Required) And
  • Has no felony convictions or other legal restrictions on the ability to carry firearms or to perform other work responsibilities. Immediate (Required)

  • Special Conditions for Employment

  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Drug Test: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory drug test.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • CANRA: The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA. The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • Clery Act: The position is a designated CSA (Campus Security Authority) under Clery Act requirements.
