Job summary

Morehouse College seeks a Police Sergeant to supervise patrol activities, respond to emergencies, and provide high-level customer service on assigned shifts. The role includes planning, budgeting, and directing operations under the supervision of a Police Lieutenant.

The Sergeant will supervise officers, trainees, and civilian security staff and may assume command in the absence of a higher-ranking officer.

Qualifications

• Two years of post-secondary coursework or equivalent
• Four years of experience as Police Sergeant or higher
• Valid Georgia Driver’s License
• Completion of POST basic course
• Current GA POST certification

Job description

To supervise and participate in the activities of patrol, respond to calls for service, emergencies, and general customer service on an assigned shift; or perform responsible administrative staff duties. Police sergeants work independently in performing regularly assigned duties under the general orders of a Police Lieutenant or other higher ranking supervisor. Supervision is exercised over Police Officer, Police Trainees, and civilian security staff. Sergeants will often assume complete charge in the absence of a higher-ranking officer. A Sergeant is responsible for planning, budgeting and directing the operations of assigned organizational components. Similarly, when an officer is not available, he/she will assume the duties as required.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of post-secondary course work in a related field equivalent to an Associate’s degree
• A minimum of four years of experience in the rank of Police Sergeant or above
• Valid Georgia State Driver’s License
• Successful completion of the Peace Officers Standards and Training basic course
• Current valid GA POST certification without

• Proficiency in state of Georgia, federal and local criminal laws, codes, and ordinances
• Standard Morehouse College Police Department law enforcement operating procedures
• Proper security and safety in the use of firearms, other mechanical, or chemical weapons, and motor vehicles
• Law enforcement procedures such as penal, evidence codes; criminal investigation; patrol and custody procedures; juvenile laws, mental health law, and administration of justice
• Proficiency of the Morehouse College policy and procedures, and Morehouse College rules and regulations
• Knowledge of ICs protocols
• Proficiency in the maintenance and usage of firearms and proficiency in operation of standard office equipment
• Ability to motivate, evaluate and supervise subordinates
• Effectively work with a variety of people or other agencies in a special or emergency situation
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, supervisors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
• Comprehensive knowledge of modern police procedures, law enforcement and investigative techniques

Physical Demands

• Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, grasping, lifting, carrying, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, use of foot controls, driving, talking, hearing and seeing
• Must successfully pass physical exam and drug test. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

Police sergeants present the first line of supervisors in the police force. They perform all the duties of a police officer as well as supervise, coordinate, and guide police officers and other department employees in their daily activities.
