Job summary

The City of Sausalito is inviting applications for a Police Officer Trainee. Pay is $35.31 per hour during the academy, with $91,811 annually upon successful completion of the academy. A $5,000 hiring bonus is awarded at academy graduation, plus $5,000 after probationary completion, totaling $10,000.

After POST Academy completion, the position becomes a full-time probationary Police Officer. Open until filled; equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED; or two-year/four-year/advanced degree from an accredited college or university. College coursework in police science, criminal justice, or a related field is desirable.

  • Enforce Federal, State, and local laws and respond to calls to protect life and property.
  • Undergo a thorough background investigation, polygraph/voice stress analysis, psychological assessment, and medical exam prior to appointment.

The City of Sausalito Police Department is seeking empathetic, driven, collaborative Police Officer Trainees. The Police Officer Trainee learns to enforce Federal, State, and local laws and to respond to calls for the protection of life and property by attending a basic Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified training academy to obtain the basic skills and fitness level necessary for the performance of Police Officer duties. This position requires a thorough background investigation, a polygraph/voice stress analysis examination, a psychological assessment, and a medical exam prior to appointment.

  • Possess good customer service skills.
  • Exercise sound judgment and initiative.
  • Be adaptable and able to occasionally work under stressful or difficult conditions.
  • Interact comfortably and effectively with a diverse population of individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Previous experience is not required but experience in a law enforcement environment is highly desirable.
  • Must be 21 years of age at the date of hire.
  • Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions.
  • Must be lawfully able to possess a firearm.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited U.S. high school; passing score on the General Education Development (GED) test; OR possession of a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university. College coursework in police science, criminal justice, or a related field is desirable.

Experience: Not required but desired.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire per California Government Code 1031.4.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States per California Government Code 1031 and Federal Code §274a.2.
  • Must be of good moral character with no felony convictions.
  • Must be lawfully able to possess a firearm.

Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
