Job description

Position Overview

This position performs law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, the officer enforces the laws of the State and the United States Government. The officer maintains law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. The officer patrols an assigned area, responds to complaints or calls, detects violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations, apprehends violators, investigates violations or complaints, collects and preserves evidence with chain of custody, testifies in court proceedings, and performs related work.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University’s pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.

Minimum Requirements
  • Police Officer I to III: $57,000 – $62,843
  • Master Police Officer I to III: $66,192 – $72,748
  • Police Officer I: A High School diploma or GED and at least probationary certification as a commissioned LEO in the State of North Carolina, with successful completion of the agency’s field training program.
  • Police Officer II: 2 years of prior experience as a sworn enforcement officer.
  • Police Officer III: 4 years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • Master Police Officer I: 6 years of prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer (a graduate or Juris Doctor degree reduces the minimum experience requirement by 1 year).
  • Master Police Officer II: 3 years of experience as a Master Police Officer or equivalent within an outside law enforcement agency; equivalent experience at a higher sworn supervisory rank will also be accepted.
  • Master Police Officer III: 6 years of experience as a Master Police Officer or equivalent within an outside law enforcement agency; equivalent experience at a higher sworn supervisory rank will also be accepted.
