Position Summary

The University Police Department (UPD) enforces laws, maintains order, and provides safety services to SF State community members. The department emphasizes public service, crime prevention, and community-oriented policing. Responsibilities include patrols, investigations, law enforcement duties, and participation in special assignments.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid California Driver's License and completion of CSU Defensive Driver's Training.
  • Must be a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement methods, criminal codes, effective communication skills, and ability to handle emergency situations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, and successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program with a Basic Course Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • No felony or domestic violence misdemeanor convictions.
  • Successful completion of P.O.S.T. background checks, polygraph, medical, psychological exams, and criminal records check.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence with citizenship application in process.
  • Minimum age of 21 at appointment.
  • Good moral character and physical fitness for active duty.
Physical and Work Environment
  • Must perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
