Job description

Shift/Schedule:
  • Full Time - Scheduled for 36 Weekly Hours
  • Three 12 Hour Shifts/Week
  • Weekend/Holiday Availability - As Required

Under the leadership of the Mercy Health Director of Safety and Police Department, and management authority of the Manager/Chief of Police, the Mercy Health Police Department (Youngstown Division) Officer is responsible for enforcing organizational safety and security policies and supporting a customer-friendly, service-oriented approach. This role operates in accordance with IAHSS guidelines and best practices.

Summary of Essential Job Responsibilities:
  1. Protects patients, visitors, and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and eliminating environment of care safety hazards.
  2. Deters vandalism, theft, and property abuse through routine patrols inside and outside hospital property.
  3. Enforces hospital policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco-free/smoking policy.
  4. Monitors hospital activity via closed-circuit television to identify escalating situations requiring security intervention.
  5. Intervenes in patient, visitor, and staff confrontations as appropriate.
  6. Completes incident documentation and advises dispatcher of duties performed.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarms, evacuation, and disaster plans.
  8. Responds to emergencies and hospital alarms as required.
  9. Completes mandatory education and maintains certifications/licensure, including IAHSS Basic Training within 90 days of hire.
  10. Maintains assigned posts, ensuring cleanliness and readiness of police vehicles and equipment.
  11. Adheres to organizational policies regarding attendance, confidentiality, dress code, ID display, and safety.
  12. Maintains professional appearance and conduct at all times.
Essential Job Accountabilities:

Accepts assignments from Police Department management, fosters team collaboration, supports inter-disciplinary work, and participates in emergency drills and safety inspections. Supports resource stewardship and quality of service, encourages feedback, and participates in data analysis and investigations. Completes reports accurately, enforces policies, supports performance improvement, and conducts safety rounds and equipment checks. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education:
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Certification required.
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree preferred.
  • IAHSS Basic Training and Certification within one year of hire.
Experience:
  • 1-2 years law enforcement or criminal justice experience preferred.
Certifications:
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Qualification with duty weapons, ECD, AED, CPR as per department requirements.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Familiarity with LEADS, NCIC, Ohio Criminal Code, evidence handling, and court procedures.
  • Ability to operate police cruiser, perform investigations, traffic control, and key control.
  • Strong communication, judgment, confidentiality, and organizational skills.
Additional Requirements:

Compliance with protective equipment policies, legal standards, and annual training requirements. Ability to appear in court and perform comprehensive investigations. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and confidentiality.
