  • Full Time - Scheduled for 36 Weekly Hours
  • Three 12 Hour Shifts/Week
  • Weekend/Holiday Availability - As Required

Mercy Health is committed to ensuring a safe environment for employees, volunteers, students, patients, visitors, and hospital property. Under the guidance of the Mercy Health Director of Safety and Police Department, and managed by the Manager/Chief of Police, the Mercy Health Police Department (Youngstown Division) Officer enforces safety and security policies and provides customer-friendly service. This role operates according to International Association of Hospital Safety and Security Management (IAHSS) guidelines.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Protects patients, visitors, and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and addressing safety hazards.
  2. Deters vandalism, theft, and property abuse through routine patrols inside and outside hospital property.
  3. Enforces hospital policies including parking, visitation, drug enforcement, and tobacco/smoking policies.
  4. Monitors hospital activity via closed circuit television to respond to escalating situations.
  5. Intervenes in patient, visitor, and staff confrontations as appropriate.
  6. Completes incident documentation and reports to dispatchers.
  7. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarms, evacuations, and disaster plans.
  8. Responds to emergencies and alarms as needed.
  9. Completes mandatory training, maintains certifications, and completes IAHSS Basic Training within 90 days of hire.
  10. Remains at assigned post, ensuring cleanliness and readiness of police vehicles and equipment.
  11. Follows organizational policies on attendance, dress code, confidentiality, and safety.
  12. Maintains professional appearance and conduct while on duty.

ESSENTIAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Accepts assignments from Police Department management to meet operational needs.
  2. Supports a service-oriented, team environment and fosters professional growth.
  3. Participates in emergency exercises and safety rounds, including equipment checks and fire drills.
  4. Supports resource stewardship and quality of service.
  5. Contributes to data gathering, investigation, and analysis to improve operations.
  6. Completes investigative reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  7. Enforces police policies and supports performance improvement initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) Certification required.
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree preferred.
  • IAHSS Basic Training and Certification within one year of hire.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years law enforcement or criminal justice experience preferred.

ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Qualification with duty weapons, ECD, AED, and CPR as per department policies.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Must comply with department requirements regarding protective gear, body cameras, and armor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of LEADS and NCIC systems.
  • Understanding of arrest, search, seizure, evidence handling, and legal procedures.
  • Good judgment, legal knowledge, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to operate police vehicles and perform investigations.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Effective verbal and written communication skills, courteous and respectful demeanor.

PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING: Analytical skills, judgment, confidentiality, and multi-tasking abilities.

SCOPE OF IMPACT/ACCOUNTABILITY: Responsible for decision-making and solutions that impact work areas and outcomes.
