Governors State University seeksto fill the position of Campus Police Officer for theDepartment of Public Safety team and invites qualifiedlaw enforcement officers to submit an application forconsideration of a lateral transfer. As required by the State Universities Civil Service Systemeligibility for appointment through Lateral requires:

• The applicant to have successfully completed at least 2 yearsof employment as a full-time sworn and certified law enforcementofficer; and
• The applicant must also have been employed as sworn policeofficers within the past 24 months and
• The applicant must either possess certification from theIllinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) andsatisfy the requirements established by the Illinois LawEnforcement Training and Standards Board, or, be eligible to becertified by ILETSB;
• The applicant must not have been suspended for disciplinaryreasons by the current or most recent employer;
• The applicant must pass a background investigation which mayinclude features such as fingerprinting, police records checks,credit checks, and inquiries of neighbors, relatives, andemployers.
• The applicant must successfully complete a screening such as apolygraph, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drugscreen as required by the hiring department.

Any applicant hired as a lateral transfer must serve a probationaryperiod of 12 months.

As part of an assigned team, Campus Police Officers provide campussafety, security, and law enforcement services to the Universitycommunity. Campus Police Officers provide a wide range of services,including both traditional and non-traditional police services.Officers are required to participate in crime prevention andcommunity-oriented public safety programming. The successfulcandidate must project a positive image. Campus Police Officersenforce University regulations, local ordinances, and state laws.Officers are first responders to incidents, accidents, and otheremergency situations and are responsible for conducting initial andfollow-up investigations into significant and criminal incidents.Campus Police Officers will work under the direction of a policesupervisor. Overtime hours are anticipated.

To preserve and protect life, property, and the rights of allpeople in accordance with the constitution and laws of the UnitedStates and the State of Illinois, and to preserve peace within theestablished limits of the university community by providing highquality law enforcement and non-related security specialty lawenforcement emergency services.

Requires an extreme amount of personal contact when providingservice, protection, and/or enforcement of law and rules. Requiresethical behavior, integrity, courtesy and service toward others.Exercise judgment in determining when to use force and to whatdegree. This position requires community policing, strong publicrelation skills, discretion, and dissemination and communication ofinformation.

Responsible for actively patrolling and providing public assistanceupholding law enforcement and public safety. Any problems that donot fall within the standard operating procedures include allgeneral and special orders and/or guidelines, arrests, emergencysituations, and equipment difficulties. This role is responsiblefor notifying and informing a DPS supervisor at the level abovemember's position through the chain of command.

This position requires significant training to be prepared for theinevitable position of answering/ resolving problems that are notin direct accord with policies and procedures. Basic training forthis position is instituted and regulated under the laws andregulations of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and StandardsBoard. Upon successful completion of academy graduation and one (1)year probation in the Department of Public Safety, this membershould be competent of the duties and responsibilities required forthis position, and comprehend legal documents including citations,affidavits, warrants, etc.

All members should gain knowledge of the job during attendance ofthe daily-roll call meeting held before starting a shift. Variouslaw enforcement certifications will be required through in-servicetraining provided by the Department and/or another Law Enforcementor Emergency Service Agency, and specialized training from theIllinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board and itssupported agency, the North-East Multi-Regional Training, and othertraining institutions depending on the needs of thedepartment.

Essential Responsibilities

50% Perform patrol responsibilities to include foot and vehicularpatrols roaming or assigned posts. Investigate incidents and makearrests based on visual, reported, or on warrant violations ofstate statue, city or county ordinances or university regulations.Prepares written reports and field notes of investigations andpatrol activities. Process detainees and testify in court of law.Issue citations for local and state moving violations. Patrolsinclude interior and exterior of Governors State University(GovState) jurisdictional boundaries or by assignment provided bysupervisors.

Open and close buildings and facilities as required by officialrequest of community members. Secure GovState property andequipment. Operate a law enforcement vehicle during day and/ornighttime as well as in inclement weather.

Conduct basic and follow-up investigations primarily due tocriminal acts or complaints received from community members.Complete investigations as required and submit reports tosupervisors for infractions of rules and regulations of theuniversity, state laws, county laws, and city ordinances.Investigations include fire preventative action and potentialsecurity reports for public safety as well as reports ofobstructions in streets and sidewalks, holes, leaking facultyutility services, and any other unusual conditions which mightendanger public safety.

25% This position serves as the first line of archivingdepartmental information and is responsible for keeping track offederal government, state, university, police and public safety,and community sharing information. Performs a variety of officesupport functions including but are not limited to scheduling,providing information orally and in writing, developing ormaintaining documents, processing mail, maintaining or coordinatingthe management of files and records system.

10% Assist community members with first-aid assistance and notifyemergency medical assistance.

Relieve and/or assist Police Telecommunicator with radiocommunications and telephone answering. Functions include radiodispatch, security monitoring of audio and video equipment, andperforming computerized related functions.

Assist local police and fire agencies during emergencies assignedby a DPS supervisor. During adverse weather conditions, assist withemergency duties as required. Command emergency personnel ataccident emergencies and disasters. As liaison, share importantinformation with other agencies including police, fire,universities, and local governments.

Answer and respond to callers seeking information, respond toemergencies as well as provide general information to communitymembers and visitors.

10% Provide executive security for dignitaries and visitors of ourcampus community as assigned by a DPS supervisor.

Provide escort services to community members to parking lots and/orto other campus locations assigned by supervisors.

5% Perform related duties as assigned by a DPS supervisor.

Starting wages: $28.04.
