Job description

A Police Officer II is the full performance level of law enforcement work enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of personnel and State property. Police Officers in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility and will receive general supervision from a Police Officer Sergeant. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night, or rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. Employees in this classification are considered Emergency Essential Personnel and must be willing and available for duty at such hours to maintain the agency's operations. Selected candidates will be required to complete a Pre-Employment Physical to assess their ability to perform essential functions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations for the protection of personnel and State property.
  • Directing vehicular traffic, enforcing parking regulations, investigating accidents, and issuing warnings and citations.
  • Preparing incident reports in accordance with agency directives.
  • Investigating criminal acts and making arrests, including testifying in court.
  • Providing emergency and first aid to sick or injured persons.
  • Responding to disturbances, emergencies, and suspicious activities.
  • Performing other functions to support law enforcement and physical security of agency properties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Notes:

  • Educational requirements are set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Military service experience may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer in Maryland.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Possibility of needing a special police commission.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years old, pass background checks, and meet physical and drug testing standards.
  • Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license.

Selection Process:

Applicants must submit complete and accurate information. The process includes a review of education, training, and experience, and successful candidates will be categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED. The eligibility list is valid for one year and may be extended.
