DUTIES:
- Patrols areas of the town; prevents and discovers the commission of crimes; apprehends criminals and offenders; enforces traffic laws.
- Responds to calls for service and complaints from citizens involving accidents, misdemeanors, and felonies.
- Conducts accident and criminal investigations; gathers evidence; interviews suspects and witnesses; writes reports; makes arrests as required; provides credible testimony in court; and performs other related police duties.
Position is considered “essential personnel”:
Defined as staff required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a U.S. citizen and 21 years of age at the date of appointment; high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license with a good record upon hire.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; must pass an extensive background investigation.
- Current Virginia law enforcement officer certification is preferred.
- Bi-lingual in Spanish is desirable.
- Willing to sign a condition of employment agreement precluding smoking on or off duty.
HOURS:
Varies, 80 hours per two-week pay period.
PROCESS:
- Written examination.
- Initial interview.
- Physical agility test.
- Background investigation.
- Polygraph examination covering illegal drug use, undetected crime, and personal history.
- Psychological evaluation.
- Oral board interview.
REAPPLICATION:
If not appointed, candidates are eligible to reapply one year after the initial test date.
LOCATION:
- Herndon Police Department; 397 Herndon Parkway, Herndon, VA 20170.
- All duties are to be fulfilled at the designated worksite; remote work is not available.
