Job Summary

The Maricopa County Community College District Police Department invites highly motivated and professional law enforcement candidates to a new and exciting opportunity as a collegiate Police Officer - Lateral .

The Police Officer - Lateral will report directly to a Police Commander or designated supervisor and performs general and specialized law enforcement, such as preserving public peace, protecting lives, property, and the rights of the public. This position will also enforce state statutory laws and acknowledge compliance with federal guidelines in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education.

Additional Information

A Lateral Officer is an experienced certified Peace Officer in good standing.

  • In-State Applicants : A successful certified Arizona Peace Officer applicant will start the field training program upon being selected.
  • Out of State Applicants : A successful out of state applicant will be required to take an AZPOST waiver exam prior to becoming a certified Peace Officer in Arizona and beginning the field training program.

Upon notification, all qualified candidates that successfully pass the District Oral Board interview will then be required to submit the following additional items :

  • AZPOST Background Questionnaire and Statement of Personal History

Submission of this form will only be accepted in an electronic format through the online state portal system managed by AZ POST

  • Candidates will need to log into https : / / my.azpost.gov / to fill out and submit their AZ POST Background Questionnaire and statement of Personal History (PH) form
  • Candidates will need to create an account with OKTA, and retain the registration number generated to their submission

Please Note : Any applicant who does not possess current AZPOST certification (e.g.,out of state candidates or those with prior AZPOST certification) must submit one of the following documents by scanning and attaching the materials to the original application :

Essential Functions

  • Routinely interacts with, and provides assistance to members of the college community, visitors and allied first responders such as fire, medical and other police personnel. Unlocks rooms and buildings; assists allied criminal justice agencies in the service of criminal and subpoenas and other court orders
  • Deters and prevents crime by patrolling buildings, facilities, properties, and other areas in the immediate vicinity of the Maricopa Community Colleges
  • Responds to complaints or requests for assistance; investigates criminal activity and takes appropriate action. May be required to arrest, detain, or subdue a resisting offender using justified and reasonable force where appropriate; may conduct searches of persons, places and things, possibly seizing and impounding property and evidence, protects crime scenes
  • Responds to calls for service including alarms, requests for medical assistance, critical incidents, traffic collisions, reports of criminal activity and other emergencies / non-emergencies
  • Observes, reports and / or remedies unsafe or problem situations and assists in identifying health and safety hazards
  • Conducts face to face interviews; observes, gathers, records, processes and preserves evidence
  • Prepares detailed written reports; presents testimony and evidence in court; mediates disputes
  • Directs traffic and / or parking activities; enforces motor vehicle operation and traffic regulations; assists motorists with vehicle problems
  • Performs crowd control and civil emergency response duties
  • Provides special services including providing personal welfare and money courier escorts
  • Provides public awareness and community education presentations
  • Trains and directs the work of non-certified Public safety Aides and other Public safety personnel
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and served for a minimum of one year as a solo police officer.

Must possess an active Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) peace officer certification and also have the following :

  • Successfully graduated from a bona fide law enforcement training academy (Note : If candidate did not graduate at an academy certified by AZPOST, it must be demonstrated that the training was equivalent to that required by AZPOST by submitting a completed AZPOST Record of Equivalent Training (RET) (please refer to the Additional Requirements section below)
  • Applicants not currently certified by AZPOST must successfully complete a Peace Officer Agility Test prior to employment
  • Successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation to ensure that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications for certification as noted in AZPOST Rule R13-4-105, and the applicant has not engaged in conduct or a pattern of conduct that would jeopardize the public trust in the law enforcement profession, and that the applicant is of good moral character
  • Completed the prior agency's probationary period functioning as a solo police officer or investigator performing law enforcement duties
  • Successfully complete a job related visual examination, physical examination, psychological examination and drug screen prior to employment
  • Possess a current, valid and unrestricted Arizona driver license or have the ability to obtain one

Special Requirements

Due to the confidential, sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a background investigation, polygraph testing, and psychological examination are required.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of first aid and CPR techniques through obtaining a CPR / First Aid certification

Special Working Conditions

  • Positions in this class may be subject to rotating shifts, unusual work hours and may be placed on an "on-call" status or called in to work with short notice
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time is typical; working outdoors in extreme heat, cold and inclement weather
  • Subject to personal danger while enforcing the laws and dealing with emergency situations; exposed to disease in the administration of first aid
  • Requires lifting a 165 lb. body, in case of an extraction or rescue situations and to meet the physical fitness requirements, as prescribed
  • Uses and maintains proficiency with firearms, taser, expandable police baton, OC (Oleoresin Capsicum), spray canister, handcuffs, two-way radio and other police related equipment; safely operates a bicycle, electric / motorized cart, motorcycle and / or police vehicles
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving : https : / / district.maricopa.edu / regulations / admin-regs / section-4 / 4-14
