Full Salary Range: $48.26/hr.- $60.68/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. *$12,000 sign-on bonus for lateral and academy graduate candidates will be paid as a pre-employment payment, paid in one lump-sum payment on your start date by the University as your employer in consideration of your services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The University of California Police Officers deliver police services to the University and local community. Officers patrol on foot, bicycle, and in vehicles; respond to crimes; investigate complaints; arrest offenders; appear in court; respond to medical, fires and other emergencies; control traffic; provide law enforcement and security at major events or assemblies; engage in crime prevention; participate in community liaison meetings; safeguard the custody and disposal of found property and evidence. Officers deliver police services to the local community in participation with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol and mutual aid to other Police Departments.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent certification.
• Completed the Law Enforcement Academy.
• Knowledge of State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations as applicable to the police.
• Competent in defensive tactics and arrest and control techniques.
• Sound judgment and the ability to process information quickly and thoroughly, while making ethical decisions.
• Skilled in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other police-related driving conditions.
• Knowledge in the use and care of firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, restraint devices, ECDs, and other safety equipment issued by the Police Department.
• Ability and experience in using computers, including Microsoft Office applications, and law enforcement databases.
• Ability and experience serving the public as a solo officer and as a team member.
• Accurate report writing skills including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Experience communicating in various forums, including one-on-one, groups, stressful situations, and using a police radio.

Preferred Qualifications

• Currently employed as a police officer for at least 2 years.
• An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Prior law enforcement experience with the University of California or higher education setting.

Special Conditions of Employment

• Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire.
• Work at any time day or night and in periods of disaster and civil disorder.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for citizenship.
• Must pass background investigation to ensure good moral character and suitability for peace officer duties.
• Applicant will be subjected to identity/fingerprint check and background checks; may include medical, psychological, and fitness assessments.
• Must possess a current California POST Basic Certificate or be enrolled in a CA POST academy with anticipated graduation within six months.
• Work a varied schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays; may include overtime and shifts up to 12 hours.
• Must have vision 20/100 correctable to 20/30, and normal color vision. Weight proportional to height.
• Uniform and equipment required; wear Kevlar vest at all times.
• Physical duties including standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and exposure to varying conditions.
• Credential verification for clinical practitioner; mandated reporting of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse; UCSB Campus Security Authority under Clery Act.
• Maintain a valid CA drivers license and enrollment in DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program.
• Background and suitability checks as required; UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Preliminary Investigation 20%

• Investigates and writes reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, and disturbances. Prepares reports for follow-up investigations.

Enforcement 20%

• Issues citations and enforces traffic, parking, criminal laws, and UC regulations.

Patrol 20%

• Patrols campus areas by vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, or on foot. Responds to calls, checks security, controls crowds and traffic, gathers evidence, and testifies in court as needed.

Public Information 5%

• Provides information to University personnel and the public; may operate radio/phone equipment and work at reception.
