Job summary

Location: PUBL-376, POLIC-0101, Santa Barbara, CA

Working Hours: Sunday – Saturday, 24‑hour variable schedule; 100% full time

Job Summary

The University of California Police Officers provide police services to the university and local community, including patrolling, responding to crimes, investigating complaints, making arrests, appearing in court, handling medical, fire, and other emergencies, controlling traffic, providing security at events, participating in community liaison meetings, and safeguarding property and evidence.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, and disturbances; prepare reports for investigators.
  • Enforce traffic, parking, and criminal laws and university regulations; issue citations and make reports.
  • Patrol campus areas by vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, or on foot.
  • Respond to calls for assistance, check security of buildings and grounds.
  • Take charge at the scene of emergencies; control crowds and assemblies; direct traffic.
  • Gather evidence, make arrests, and appear in court as a witness.
  • Report hazardous conditions and unusual circumstances.
  • Provide public information, direct personnel, and operate radio and telephone equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed the Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws applicable to police.
  • Competence in defensive tactics, arrest and control techniques.
  • Sound judgment and ability to process information quickly and ethically.
  • Skilled in motor vehicle operation under emergency and police conditions.
  • Ability to use and care for firearms, impact weapons, chemicals, restraints, ECDs, and other safety equipment.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, and law enforcement databases.
  • Excellent public service and teamwork skills.
  • Strong report writing skills with proper grammar, punctuation, and organization.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and on police radio.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience as a police officer.
  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Prior law enforcement experience within the University of California or a higher‑education setting.
Special Conditions of Employment
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Work any time day or night, including periods of disaster and civil disorder.
  • Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.
  • Pass background investigation and meet selection requirements under California law.
  • Undergo identity/fingerprint, criminal history, drug, medical, psychological, and physical fitness testing.
  • Pass comprehensive pre‑placement examinations.
  • Hold a current California POST Basic Certificate or equivalent.
  • Work varied schedule: nights, weekends, holidays; 8‑, 10‑, or 12‑hour shifts; overtime; alternative schedules; outside in all weather.
  • Vision of 20/100 correctable to 20/30, normal color vision; body weight proportional to height.
  • Wear uniform and equipment, including utility belt, firearm, baton, flashlight, handcuffs, Kevlar vest.
  • Perform duties that may involve climbing, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling, handling objects.
  • Meet mandatory reporting requirements: Child Abuse, Dependent Adult Abuse, Clery Act, etc.
  • Maintain valid CA driver’s license and satisfactory DMV record.
  • UCSB is a tobacco‑free environment.
