Job description

Role Descr The Police Officer role is a full-time, on-site position based in Hillsdale, MI. The Police Officer is responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing local, state, and federal laws, and responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Daily activities include patrolling assigned areas, conducting traffic stops, completing incident and accident reports, and engaging with community members to build trust and promote crime prevention. The role also involves conducting preliminary and follow-up criminal investigations, collecting and preserving evidence, and testifying in court as needed. Police Officers are expected to work collaboratively with other law enforcement and public safety agencies, follow departmental policies and procedures, and uphold ethical and professional standards at all times.
Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in law enforcement and police operations, including patrol duties, community policing, and incident response.
• Experience or training related to criminal investigations and evidence handling, including proper collection, documentation, and chain of custody procedures.
• Understanding of legal standards and practices relevant to police officers, including constitutional rights, use-of-force guidelines, and applicable criminal laws.
• Completion of a recognized police academy or basic law enforcement training program; eligibility for Michigan law enforcement certification or licensure is preferred.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing, court testimony, and engaging with diverse community members.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and make timely decisions in high-stress or rapidly changing situations.
• Physical fitness sufficient to perform patrol duties, respond to emergencies, and carry required equipment; ability to meet department fitness and medical standards.
• Commitment to ethical conduct, integrity, respect, and equitable treatment of all individuals, consistent with department policies and community expectations.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record; ability to work various shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
• Previous law enforcement or military experience is beneficial but not required.
