City of Battle Creek (MI) seeks a police officer to perform patrols, respond to calls, enforce laws, and safeguard the public. You will investigate incidents, issue tickets, and testify in court as needed.

Requires Michigan MCOLES licensure (active or inactive) and an associate degree or equivalent. Veterans DD-214 is required for eligibility and applicants must be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime.

Qualifications

  • Must be nineteen (19) years of age on date of appointment.
  • Associates degree with coursework in criminal justice or related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Licensed as a police officer with an \"Active\" or \"Inactive\" status as set by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), OR licensed in another state with an equivalent status and subject to meeting MCOLES licensing requirements.
  • Honorably discharged Veterans from the USA Armed Forces must supply a copy of your DD-214.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a radio-equipped cruiser to prevent crime and disorder, protect life and property, and direct traffic.
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; explains and enforces applicable laws and ordinances.
  • Investigates suspicious activities; interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects to obtain information; conducts searches; apprehends violators.
  • Serves criminal processes including warrants and subpoenas.
  • Writes and issues tickets for infractions such as parking, traffic, and ordinance violations.
  • Restores order at scenes of traffic accidents or emergencies; provides information and assistance to the public.
  • Obtains and preserves evidence, testifies in court, and assists in prosecutions.

ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION MUST BE COMPLETED & TURNED IN BEFORE AN INTERVIEW CAN BE SCHEDULED

Performs responsible law enforcement and patrol duties; Maintains order in an assigned district or as assigned; Regulates traffic, protects life and property and prevents crime and disorder; and performs related work as required.

Work performed under the supervision of a Police Sergeant or his/her designee.

  • Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a radio-equipped cruiser to prevent crime and disorder, to protect life and property, to direct traffic, investigate accidents, and enforce motor vehicle operations and parking regulations.
  • Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; explains and enforces applicable State and local laws and ordinances.
  • Investigates suspicious activities; interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects to obtain additional necessary information regarding crimes, accidents, violations, etc.; conducts searches; apprehends and arrests violators of the law.
  • Serves criminal processes including warrants and subpoenas.
  • Writes and issues tickets for infractions such as parking, traffic, and ordinance violations.
  • Restores order when called to the scene of traffic accidents or other emergencies.
  • Assists elderly and ill people, gives first aid, and locates missing persons and lost children; guards prisoners and assumes responsibility for their safety and personal property while in custody.
  • Keeps records and makes reports of accidents, complaints, criminal offenses, and other incidents.
  • Provides information and assistance to the general public.
  • Obtains and preserves evidence, testifies in court, and otherwise assists in the prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Ensures vehicle is properly maintained and performs vehicle inspections; maintains individual equipment.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies when requested or assigned.
  • May be assigned to investigation, crime lab, narcotics, gang, emergency response team, community service, or other technical or special support operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be nineteen (19) years of age on date of appointment.
  • Associates degree with coursework in criminal justice or related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Licensed as a police officer with an "Active" or "Inactive" status as set by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), OR licensed in another state with an equivalent status and subject to meeting MCOLES' licensing requirements. 1-3 or more years’ experience as an MCOLES licensed law enforcement officer.
  • Honorably discharged Veterans from the USA Armed Forces must supply a copy of your DD-214.
Special Requirements
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Legally able to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license..
  • Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on an overtime basis
  • Candidates with NO prior law enforcement experience or certification are eligible to apply for the Police Recruit position.
