Base pay range

$57,469.00/yr - $83,278.00/yr

Summary

To serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities.

Help

Duties
  • Serve as a Police Officer ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA administrations and properties, including VHA Medical Centers, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, and domiciliaries nationwide. Act as the face of the VA, providing security and assistance to all visitors and staff, engaging with individuals to ensure safety and positive interactions.
  • Carry out policing responsibilities primarily on VA properties, understanding and applying different enforcement rules based on jurisdiction (Exclusive, Concurrent, Proprietorial).
Work Schedule:

Rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

The position involves strenuous physical activity such as running, climbing stairs, and lifting over 50 pounds. Candidates must possess stamina, agility, and emotional stability to perform duties safely and effectively, with accommodations considered as needed.

Investigation of Fitness:

A character investigation may be conducted to assess honesty, integrity, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.

Medical Requirements:

Applicants must have good near and distant vision, color distinction, and hearing ability. Additional medical requirements may apply based on job duties.

Promotion Potential:

Promotion to full performance level is possible without further competition, upon meeting all requirements.

Requirements
  • U.S. citizen
  • Background and suitability investigation
  • Drug testing may be required
  • Probationary period may apply
  • Selective Service Registration (for males)

  • Complete online onboarding and provide acceptable ID documents
  • REAL ID compliance required after May 7, 2025
  • Law enforcement officers must carry approved firearms and qualify annually
  • Proficiency in English required
  • No domestic violence convictions for handgun ownership
  • Complete 8-week Basic Police Officer Course in Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Maintain physical, psychological, and weapons qualifications annually
  • Valid state driver’s license required
Qualifications

Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience or a 4-year degree in Police Science or related field, or a combination of education and experience with police training.

GS-06: One year of experience at the GS-05 level, involving law enforcement duties such as responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, and maintaining order.
