East Texas A&M University seeks a Police Officer to patrol campuses, respond to incidents, and enforce laws. You will secure scenes, interview witnesses, write reports, and may arrest suspects. The role requires a valid driver license, TCOLE license, and the ability to work irregular hours across six Dallas/Northeast Texas locations.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, plus either college credits or military service documentation. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 12 college hours from an accredited college or university or 1 year of active military service with DD214 documentation.
  • Fluent in American English; strong grammar and spelling; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver license and good driving record.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays; function under stress.

* Patrols designated areas by vehicle, on foot, or by bicycle to prevent, discover, and deter the commission of crime, to enforce criminal law, to direct traffic, and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations.* Responds to calls and complaints involving the violation(s) of criminal law.* Writes detailed reports on police-related activities. Interviews complainants and generates reports to be forwarded to CID or other departments as needed.* Secures crime scenes, conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, apprehends suspects, makes arrests, and transports offenders.* Be available to assist faculty, staff and students with general information, inquiries, or other needs.* Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests, juvenile hearings, depositions, and similar proceedings.* Serves arrest warrants, search warrants and other papers, as required.* Keeps informed and aware of persons and places suspected of illegal activity and/or the potential for problems within an assigned area.* Responsible for decisions as to the appropriate action necessary in accordance with rules, regulations, policies, federal, state, and local laws.* Recognizes and reports safety hazards.* Develop and maintain required skills and certificates. Attends continuing education courses/law enforcement training.* Uses and properly cares for firearms and related police emergency equipment. Must wear and effectively utilize all department issued equipment, as well as, maintain provided uniform and equipment and present a professional appearance and image.* Operate a motor vehicle safely while utilizing a police radio and other emergency equipment. Operate and qualify with the department issued firearms, utilizing both hands, as well as with each hand individually. Operate office equipment, camera systems and field equipment.* Retain and retrieve information furnished in the form of bulletins, verbal reports, briefings, and training.* Project a professional image, both on duty and off, as dictated by Texas A&M-Commerce Police Department policy and procedure.- **Education:*** High school diploma or equivalent AND:* Minimum of twelve (12) hours of college credit from an accredited college or university (must provide documentation of college credit with an official transcript) OR* Minimum of one (1) year of active duty in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. No equivalency will be granted unless the candidate was honorably discharged and has a DD Form 214 to document service and type of discharge. If the candidate is currently serving in the Reserves / Guard and a DD Form 214 is not available, appropriate documentation form the candidate's unit verifying active duty service will suffice.- **Experience / Knowledge / Skills*** Fluent in American English. Proficient in American English grammar and spelling. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.- **Ability to:*** Multitask and work cooperatively with others.* Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends and/or holidays.* Communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.* Function under adverse and stressful conditions.* Valid driver license and good driving record.* Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license. *All system university police will be required to meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) § 217.1.*- **Physical/Psychological Requirements:*** Ability to obtain a passing Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Licensee Medical Condition Declaration (L-2).* Ability to obtain a passing Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Licensee Psychological and Emotional Health Declaration (L-3).- **Other Requirements:*** Background investigation and testing to include psychological examination required. May be required to submit to polygraph exam and drug testing.
