Job description

The University of Texas at Austin Police Department (UTPD) is an accredited state police agency, serving the UT community 24 hours a day. UTPD includes an investigative division, K-9 teams, bicycle patrol team, and its own 911 Dispatch Center. For more information on UTPD, please visit: https://police.utexas.edu/

This position is open to current University of Texas at Austin Police Department commission officers and external candidates who possess a peace officer’s license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

Qualifications and Responsibilities

• Proactively patrols or works a fixed post to protect university property, prevent crime, maintain peace, and investigate activities.
• Exercises judgment within legal and departmental parameters.
• Detains and arrests criminal offenders as authorized by law.
• Proficient with equipment including firearms, restraints, vehicles, and communication devices.
• Completes the UTPD lateral Field Training Program upon hiring.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, with successful completion of a TCOLE approved Basic Peace Officer Course and certification exam.
• Must pass the UT System physical fitness test and background check.
• Must be a U.S. citizen with a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to communicate clearly and complete forms accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 2 years of law enforcement experience with a department of 100+ officers.
• 60+ hours from an accredited college or university.
• Experience in higher education environments and bilingual skills.
• Possession of TCOLE Basic Peace Officer Certification.

Salary starts at $68,626 plus credits for prior law enforcement experience. The role involves working various shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays, in all weather and working conditions.
