Job description

The annual salary for this position ranges from $95,000 to $101,000. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Purpose of Position

The University of Texas at Arlington Police Department seeks an experienced and highly motivated Detective to conduct complex criminal investigations. This role independently manages cases from assignment through prosecution, investigating crimes against persons, property crimes, financial crimes, sexual assaults, death investigations, and other major offenses. Responsibilities include interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects; collecting and analyzing evidence; preparing reports, warrants, and case files; collaborating with prosecutors and law enforcement partners; and presenting cases for prosecution. Successful candidates will possess strong investigative, analytical, and case management skills, sound judgment, and extensive knowledge of criminal law and investigative practices. Serves as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.

Essential Functions

• Conducts complex criminal investigations to identify, apprehend, and support the prosecution of offenders; serves as the department’s investigative resource on major and high-profile cases.
• Serves as lead detective on major, complex, and sensitive criminal investigations, directing investigative strategies and coordinating resources.
• Prepares detailed case reports, affidavits, search and arrest warrants, and evidentiary documentation; presents cases for prosecution and testifies in court.
• Coordinates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and external partners to gather, analyze, and exchange intelligence and investigative information.
• Plans and conducts surveillance operations; develops and maintains confidential informants, intelligence sources, and investigative networks.
• Provides investigative leadership, guidance, and periodic oversight to detectives; reviews investigative files for accuracy and completeness.
• Provides training and mentoring to departmental personnel and oversees crime scene processing and evidence collection.
• Serves as one of several on-call investigators for major crimes, critical incidents, and complex investigations requiring advanced expertise and independent judgment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Current Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Advanced Peace Officer license.
• Ten years of overall experience as a commissioned peace officer. Five years’ experience as a law enforcement criminal investigator/detective.
• Criminal investigation courses.
• Must be proficient with the operation and safety procedures of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Proficiency in all phases of duties performed. Must demonstrate logical, effective problem-solving ability.
• Must be able to provide credible testimony in a court of law.
• Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, carrying, reaching above the head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding.
• Must be in good physical condition and have adequate vision and hearing, the ability to speak, and full use of the arms and legs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Possess a TCOLE instructor certification.
• Possess a Master TCOLE certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Must be proficient with the operation of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and municipal laws, including constitutional provisions governing search and seizure, use of force, and the rules of evidence.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, management, and leadership.
• Ability to exercise self-control and sound judgment in evaluating situations in an emergency or non-emergency environment through the implementation of effective, timely, and reasonable decision-making.

Work Schedule

• Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
• Our University Police Agency operates 24/7, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
