Job Description

This is a trainee-level position. Non-sworn incumbents perform the entry-level functions under the direct supervision of a higher‑rank police officer, excluding duties that require Peace Officer status or the use of firearms. Incumbents must be enrolled in an accredited police academy offering POST course requirements at the basic level. They apply campus policies and procedures to resolve routine police issues, work on problems of limited scope, and follow standard practices in analyzing situations or data to obtain readily available answers.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge in First Aid/CPR, campus streets, buildings and parking lots, general law‑enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, and use of firearms; new recruits within one year of appointment.
  • Observes situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and records pertinent information accurately and completely.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
  • Ability to pass medical and psychological examinations and to undergo an extensive background investigation in compliance with California POST standards.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts in inclement weather; daily functions may require wearing a uniform.
  • No felony convictions.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent‑resident alien who is eligible for citizenship.
  • At least 21 years old at the time of hire.
  • Possesses a valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Clear spoken and written English, with appropriate vocabulary for reports.
  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Must complete a California POST Regular Basic Course (RBC) within one year of employment.
  • Obtains proof of POST eligibility prior to full employment.
  • Complies with SB2 and/or SB960 as noted with the California POST Commission Code 1029/1031.
  • Maintains POST Firearms and PC 832 Arrest qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and university regulations, as well as basic law‑enforcement terminology and concepts.

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range depends on work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions represented by a labor union, placement will be guided by the collective bargaining agreement.
