Job Duties

The UWOPD Dispatcher evaluates and acts upon information and knowledge regarding safety, law enforcement, and the University in general. This position is responsible for communication via radio, Mobile Data Computer (MDC) terminal, telephone, written correspondence, computer programs, and chat, as well as in‑person conversation and customer service. It coordinates emergency and non‑emergency communication between the UW Oshkosh Police Department and other campus departments, law‑enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical units, and other agencies. The dispatcher also monitors alarm panels, numerous radio frequencies, and serves as the after‑hours emergency contact for the campus community.

Additional duties include maintaining the computerized police record‑keeping system, ensuring accuracy in all entries, providing dispatch training to all dispatchers and officers, and ensuring that security measures are met with regard to confidential information and record retention. The position is eligible for Night Differential Pay for time worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

• Operate police radios, phone consoles, and various equipment and technologies to receive and process requests and information from institutional affiliates, law‑enforcement, and other public‑safety agencies
• Schedule logistics and secure resources for response to emergency incidents for the institution
• Communicate effectively and provide accurate and detailed instructions to all types of audiences in high‑stress emergency situations
• Troubleshoot, triage, and elevate issues according to established policies and procedures
• Document incidents accurately and adhere to all applicable policies, rules, and regulations
• Train new dispatchers, manage training task updates, and provide training and coaching weekly reports; assist in ensuring training initiatives are completed
• Maintain complex records of information in directories and alarm databases, ensure continuity of operations plans, and keep other resources accurate and up‑to‑date
• Assist with leading and coordinating projects
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• At least 2 years of experience in a customer‑service related position
• Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Proven ability to perform varied tasks quickly, accurately and simultaneously while under stress
• Experience recognizing and protecting confidential information
• Positive attitude and proactive, team‑oriented mindset
• Demonstrated ability to accurately detect and interpret essential visual and auditory signals required for safe and effective performance while maintaining focus in environments with varying noise levels
• Commitment to demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and cultural competency when serving a diverse campus community

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher college degree
• Prior experience in a dispatch center or communications center capacity
• Knowledge of the TIME system procedures and DOT/NCIC/CIB policies and guidelines
• Some knowledge of police authority, judicial procedures, and law‑enforcement reporting requirements
• Ability to operate communications systems, including two‑way radio dispatch equipment, multi‑line telephone systems, MDC systems, and alarm systems
