Job Description

Under general supervision, performs police communications andrelated clerical work in a central communications center.

Responsibilities
  • Operates emergency telephones, two-way radios, teletype,telecommunications and computer terminal equipment, closed circuittelevisions, remote control cameras, alarm and securitysystems.
  • Answers emergency telephone lines. Monitors and maintains radiocommunications.
  • Receives and records information and requests related to policeservices. Dispatches police officers. Notifies command,supervisory, and administrative personnel about incidents.
  • Transmits and receives telephonic communications with thesurrounding local jurisdictions.
  • Operates specialized communications networking equipment andcomputer terminals. Accesses restricted law enforcementnetworks.
  • Obtains, inputs, and receives data related to police activitiessuch as criminal history, warrants, and vehicle registration.
  • Monitors radio frequencies and transmissions of the Allied LawEnforcement Agencies, National Weather Service, and Maryland CivilDefense.
  • Relays information from field officers requesting back up andsupport services such as crime lab technicians, K-9 unit, emergencymedical services, rescue, and fire equipment.
  • Maintains manual and computerized logs and prepares complaintcontrol cards and reports.
  • Monitors safety and security systems, reports malfunctions asappropriate, and dispatches appropriate personnel to alarmsite.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.
Experience
  • Two years clerical or other related experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Skill in the use of keyboards and office equipment.
  • Ability to type accurately; to learn emergency communicationswork.
  • To learn applicable procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and inwriting.
  • Ability to react calmly, quickly, and decisively in emergencysituations.
  • Ability to obtain, summarize and relay information orally andin writing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to monitor multiple frequencies.
Other

Except for qualifications established by law, additionalrelated experience and formal education in which one has gained theknowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance ofthe work of the job class may be substituted for the education orexperience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 collegecredits being equivalent to one year of experience.
