Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, the PoliceCaptain will be responsible for planning, coordinating, anddirecting the operation of an armed college police department forthe protection of students, staff, visitors, and facilities. ThePolice Captain also trains, supervises, and evaluates theperformance of assigned personnel.
Typical Duties
Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:
LEADERSHIP/COORDINATION:
- Administering the college traffic and patrol program.
- Directing the preparation of citations against violators to themunicipal courts as required.
- Approving schedules and assignments to maintain fulloperational patrol schedules.
- Serving as the incident commander at emergencies involving LosRios Community College District jurisdiction, or mutual aid eventsas requested by the Chief of Police.
- Overseeing and performing a variety of tasks, such asfingerprinting staff members, and monitoring campus building alarmsystems.
- Overseeing the campus patrol program.
- Overseeing special programs and/or projects for the districtsuch as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy andCampus Crime Statistics Act
COLLABORATION/TEAM BUILDING:
- Responding to parking and citizen complaints.
- Assisting with the preparation and monitoring of departmentbudgets.
- Participating on committees at the college and Districtlevel.
- Serving as watch commander in absence of police sergeant.
- Performing the duties of a Police Officer, when necessary.
- Assisting with the department’s emergency preparedness andresponse programs.
- Maintaining close relationship with law enforcementjurisdiction in the District on matters involving students and inthe development of joint programs for emergency response and crimeprevention.
- Rendering emergency first aid and CPR.
PROJECT DOCUMENTATION/DELIVERABLES:
- Providing for the proper maintenance, use, and operation ofequipment, supplies, and materials assigned for use within thecollege police program.
- Maintaining records and files of reports submitted byofficers.
- Evaluating the Clery Act report.
- Maintaining a college police manual for use by college policestaff.
TRAINING/STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND SUPERVISION:
- Training, supervising, and evaluating college policepersonnel.
- Supervising and conducting investigations, and filing reportsfor recommendations regarding theft, building security, automobileparking, safety, and related problems.
- Ensuring college safety through oversight of patrollingactivities, safety checks of buildings, elimination of firehazards, prevention of theft and vandalism, and reporting unusualhazardous or suspicious occurrences and conditions.
- Evaluating reports and logs and providing proper feedback asnecessary.
- Maintaining current knowledge in scope of duties.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institutioncompleted by time of hire.
- Three years of experience, including two years in a lead orsupervisory capacity, as a law enforcement officer.
- Currently possesses the California Commission on Peace OfficerStandards and Training (POST) Advanced Certificate.
- Licensed to carry firearms.
- Complete California POST Supervisory course within one year ofhire.
- Completion of the requirements (psychological and medicalexaminations, background investigation, etc.) for appropriate POSTcertification.
