Job summary

The University Medical Center Police Department seeks a Police Cadet - Campus Police for a non-sworn, developmental role on the Main Campus Jackson, MS. Cadets are introduced to public safety operations within a healthcare academic environment under close supervision.

They perform support duties, gain exposure to law enforcement complexities, and work with sworn officers during routine activities on the healthcare campus.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; must be 18+ years old.
• Valid US Driver’s License; pre-employment drug screen required.
• Strong interest in healthcare security or public service; bilingual ability is a plus.
• Basic computer and mobile device proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Support dispatch, reports, records, and credentialing duties under supervision.
• Observe sworn officers during patrols, escorts, and response to incidents.
• Provide customer service and wayfinding support for patients, visitors, and staff.
• Assist with community policing initiatives, outreach events, and security surveys under guidance.
• Participate in scenario-based training, drills, and wellness/fitness development activities.
• Monitor video surveillance, access control, and security systems under supervision.
• Assist in inspection and stocking of police vehicles, first aid kits, and equipment.
• Uphold confidentiality standards, especially HIPAA-related environments.

Job Summary:

The Police Cadet position is a non-sworn, developmental role within the University Medical Center Police Department. It is designed to introduce students and aspiring law enforcement professionals to public safety operations in a healthcare academic environment. Under close supervision, cadets perform a variety of support duties and receive exposure to the complexities of law enforcement in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary medical campus.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong interest in healthcare security, law enforcement, or public service careers. Basic understanding of medical center operations and visitor management principles. Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual ability is a plus. Capacity to maintain composure in fast-paced, high-stress environments. Familiarity with confidentiality requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA) is strongly preferred, and Proficient in basic computer use and mobile communication devices.
