Job summary

Craftsmen Industries in Highland, IL is seeking a Plumbing & Mechanical Technician to assemble, install, and finish components for custom trailers and specialty vehicles. You will apply plumbing skills, mechanical aptitude, and hands-on fabrication to support the full build process of one-of-a-kind products.

Daily tasks include installing water lines, drains, fixtures, pumps, tanks, and gas lines, reading blueprints, and supporting fabrication across production.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 2+ years of experience in plumbing, mechanical assembly, construction, maintenance, manufacturing, or related skilled trade.
• Experience with plumbing systems, including installation, troubleshooting, and repair.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical work instructions.
• Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment.
• Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, custom manufacturing environment.
• Willingness and flexibility to assist with multiple areas of trailer production beyond plumbing responsibilities.
• Must demonstrate a consistent and stable work history.

Responsibilities

• Promote and maintain a safe work environment by following company safety policies, OSHA standards, and proper use of PPE.
• Utilize plumbing skills to install, connect, test, and troubleshoot plumbing systems within custom trailers and specialty vehicles.
• Install water lines, drains, fixtures, pumps, tanks, valves, fittings, and related components according to drawings and specifications.
• Install, inspect, and understand various types of propane equipment and storage tanks, including the proper routing and installation of gas lines.
• Perform mechanical assembly and installation of components used in custom trailer construction.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, engineering drawings, and work instructions to complete assigned tasks.
• Support fabrication, assembly, and finishing activities required to complete custom builds.
• Identify and communicate installation challenges, material concerns, and potential quality issues to Team Leads and Supervisors.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, efficiency, and waste reduction.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support production needs and customer commitments.

Position Title: Plumbing & Mechanical Technician

Location: Highland, IL

Position Summary:

A Plumbing & Mechanical Technician is responsible for assembling, installing, and finishing components used in the construction of custom trailers and specialty vehicles. This position utilizes plumbing skills, mechanical aptitude, and hands‑on fabrication abilities to support the complete build process of one‑of‑a‑kind products.

While this role will utilize plumbing experience to install and troubleshoot water systems, fixtures, piping, and related components, most of the position will involve supporting the overall construction and assembly of custom trailers.

This work environment is dynamic and versatile in nature, where employees are expected to wear multiple hats and contribute across multiple areas of the manufacturing process. Daily tasks and priorities may shift based on production schedules, customer requirements, and project needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Utilize plumbing skills to install, connect, test, and troubleshoot plumbing systems within custom trailers and specialty vehicles.

Preferred Skills:

• Plumbing certification, apprenticeship completion, or technical trade training.
• Experience working with RVs, food trucks, specialty vehicles, trailers, marine applications, or custom fabrication.
• Experience with PEX, PVC, pumps, tanks, and water systems.
• Experience with mechanical assembly, fabrication, electrical, carpentry, or construction.
• Experience in a custom manufacturing or low-volume/high-mix production environment.
• Experience with soda fountain heads and commercial ice makers.

Physical Requirements:

• Physically able to stand up to 8+ hours per day.
• Must have the ability to hear and respond to auditory signals, distinguish tones and pitches in equipment, and use hearing protection during specific tasks.
• Must be able to lift/carry up to 75 lbs.
• Must be able to stand, walk, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, climb, balance, and reach overhead.
• Vision abilities required by this job include close and/or color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
• Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, and ear protection.
• Physically able to use Respiratory protection, as needed.
