You can join our team in several capacities:

As a General PME Inspector:
  • Starting pay ranges from $23.57/hr to $37.00/hr, based on experience and certifications
  • Requires two years’ experience in the construction industry
  • Note: A 4-year degree in an architectural, engineering, or construction-related field can qualify for a probationary Level II certificate
As a Senior PME Inspector:
  • Starting pay ranges from $26.33/hr to $44.76/hr, based on experience and certifications
  • Must hold a Standard Level III Building Inspections certificate
  • Requires five years of experience in the construction industry

Typical Day
  • Fieldwork with limited supervision
  • Review construction plans for code compliance
  • Assist customers with code and procedural questions
  • Troubleshoot site issues and participate in pre-submittal meetings
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and homeowners to ensure compliance
Work Locations

Based out of one of three Regional Centers across Wake County.

About Wake County

Wake County, the state capital's county, is rapidly growing with over one million residents. It hosts the Research Triangle Park and several universities. Our department provides building inspections and permits for unincorporated areas and contracted towns, handling 50,000–60,000 inspections annually.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Five years of construction industry experience
  • Standard Level III Code Official Certification in Plumbing, Mechanical, or Electrical trades upon hire
  • Equivalent education and experience accepted

Preferred Qualifications
  • Inspector prequalification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Windows
