Position: Plumbing & Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Pleasanton, CA (East Bay)
Salary: $90K - $140K (DOE)
Overview
An established engineering firm in the East Bay is seeking an experienced Plumbing & Mechanical Design Engineer to support a variety of commercial and institutional building projects.
This role is ideal for candidates with strong experience in plumbing and mechanical systems design who enjoy working across all phases of a project, from conceptual design through construction. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and coordinating plumbing and mechanical building systems, while also supporting HVAC-related design efforts as needed. You will collaborate closely with clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams to deliver practical, code-compliant engineering solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and coordinate plumbing and mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, education, and mixed-use building projects
- Develop designs for domestic water, sanitary waste, storm drainage, natural gas, pumping systems, and other plumbing infrastructure
- Design and coordinate mechanical building systems, including equipment layouts, piping systems, and related infrastructure
- Support HVAC system design and integration with overall building systems as project needs require
- Prepare engineering calculations, construction documents, drawings, and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, and related design tools
- Collaborate with clients, architects, contractors, and internal project teams to develop effective and constructible solutions
- Conduct site visits, field investigations, and construction coordination meetings
- Support projects through all phases of design and construction, including troubleshooting and resolving field issues
- Assist with project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution
- Build and maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships
- Mentor and support junior engineering and design staff as needed
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience designing plumbing and mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, or mixed-use buildings
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, natural gas, and related building infrastructure
- Experience with mechanical system design, piping systems, equipment selection, and building infrastructure coordination
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems and multidisciplinary MEP design coordination
- Experience preparing construction documents, specifications, calculations, and design packages
- Familiarity with California Plumbing Code, California Mechanical Code, California Building Code, and applicable industry standards
- Experience with California Title 24 requirements is preferred
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit
- Experience coordinating with architects, contractors, owners, and other engineering disciplines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a collaborative consulting environment
