Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. in Memphis is seeking a Plumbing Design Intern to gain real-world experience in plumbing systems design while working with seasoned professionals on nationwide projects.

You will assist in designing plumbing systems, participate in site visits and design reviews, and prepare technical documentation using Revit. Ideal candidates are pursuing mechanical or architectural engineering with CAD familiarity and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field with an interest in building systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other CAD tools (preferred but not required).
• Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers in the design of plumbing systems for healthcare, education, commercial, sports and entertainment facilities.
• Participate in site visits, design meetings, and internal project reviews.
• Prepare calculations, diagrams, and technical documentation using Revit.
• Conduct research to support engineering decisions and code compliance; collaborate across disciplines.

What You'll Do

We are seeking a Plumbing Design Internto join our dynamic team. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain real-world experience in plumbing systems design while working alongside experienced professionals on projects that make a difference in communities nationwide.

• Assist engineers in the design of plumbing systems for various facility types, including healthcare, education, commercials, sports and entertainment projects.
• Participate in site visits, design meetings, and internal project reviews.
• Prepare calculations, diagrams, and technical documentation using Revit.
• Conduct research to support engineering decisions and code compliance.Collaborate across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) in a team-focused environment.
• Gain familiarity with industry codes and standards including IPC, UPC, NFPA, and ASPE.

Who We're Looking For

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field with an interest in building systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other CAD tools (preferred but not required).
• Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Knowledge of theories and methodologies relevant to the discipline.
• Clear written communication and presentation skills; strong speech clarity.
• Judgment and decision-making, with attention to detail and follow‑through.
• Positive interpersonal collaboration and professionalism in team settings.
