Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. (SSR) in Houston, TX is seeking a Plumbing Design Intern to gain hands-on experience designing plumbing systems for healthcare, education, and commercial facilities.

You will work with engineers, participate in site visits, meetings, and reviews, and develop technical documentation using Revit. Ideal candidates are Mechanical or Architectural Engineering students, eager to learn, detail-oriented, and capable of collaborating across disciplines.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field with an interest in building systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other CAD tools (preferred but not required).
• Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers in the design of plumbing systems for various facility types, including healthcare, education, commercials, sports and entertainment projects.
• Participate in site visits, design meetings, and internal project reviews.
• Prepare calculations, diagrams, and technical documentation using Revit.
• Conduct research to support engineering decisions and code compliance.
• Collaborate across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) in a team-focused environment.
• Gain familiarity with industry codes and standards including IPC, UPC, NFPA, and ASPE.

What You’ll Do
