Job summary

Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. is seeking a Plumbing Design Intern to gain real-world experience in plumbing systems design while working with seasoned professionals on nationwide projects.

The internship offers exposure to healthcare, education, commercial, and entertainment facilities, with emphasis on code compliance, site visits, and collaborative design reviews.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering or related field.
• Familiarity with CAD tools preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers in plumbing system design for healthcare, education, commercial, sports and entertainment projects.
• Participate in site visits, design meetings, and internal project reviews.
• Prepare calculations, diagrams, and technical documentation using Revit.
• Conduct research to support engineering decisions and code compliance.
• Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, civil disciplines in a team setting.
• Familiarize with IPC, UPC, NFPA, and ASPE codes.

What You'll Do

We are seeking a Plumbing Design Intern to join our dynamic team. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain real-world experience in plumbing systems design while working alongside experienced professionals on projects that make a difference in communities nationwide.

• Assist engineers in the design of plumbing systems for various facility types, including healthcare, education, commercials, sports and entertainment projects.
• Participate in site visits, design meetings, and internal project reviews.
• Prepare calculations, diagrams, and technical documentation using Revit.
• Conduct research to support engineering decisions and code compliance.
• Collaborate across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.) in a team-focused environment.
• Gain familiarity with industry codes and standards including IPC, UPC, NFPA, and ASPE.

Who We're Looking For

Minimum Requirements:

• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field with an interest in building systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or other CAD tools (preferred but not required).
• Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take initiative.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Knowledge of theories and methodologies relevant to the discipline.
• Clear written communication and presentation skills; strong speech clarity.
• Judgment and decisionmaking, with attention to detail and followthrough.
• Positive interpersonal collaboration and professionalism in team settings.

What We Offer

• Paid overtime and a housing allowance provided for interns who do not reside near any of our office locations.
